Can I ask the Committee what plans there are to make the factory photos available once more? During the research that John Morris and I were doing on hoods, etc., it would have been very useful to have been able to have had high resolution images to work from but usually all we could do was use images from books which inevitably lacked resolution.

I agree with Simon and am also eagerly awaiting a response from the committee, adding that period photos are even more valuable when there are no nearby cars to compare with or take notes from.

Hi Simon

Sorry for the lack of response. Many of us are working flat out on other stuff at present (Welsh Marches weekend, etc etc) and it needs proper time to reflect, research etc etc.

I'm away this coming week but will try to find time whe I return.

Please bear with us - The Register has absolutely no staff and you know what it's like being a volunteer .....

And apart from everything else I have been under "the thumb" from Cat for a piece I am writing for the next Yearbook! She has her deadline set in concrete.

Subject - not allowed to say!

I am guessing, but this thread sounds like an offer to help do the actual work - spread the load a bit?

Nick,

Things are sometimes not quite as simple as they appear.

To be honest, Nick, while I'm based in the Caucasus I can't really do anything to help that can't be done by email, such as our collaboration over Octagon Heaven and the MG MaGazine. But I first enquired about these photos when my J2 went to Oliver Richardson and I'd have liked to have been able to consult them. I was told then that they were being scanned and that was almost three years ago. So while I'm sure there's more to it than meets the eye, they are such a fantastic resource that it's a shame that they're not available. But if we knew what the problem was then perhaps some members would be able to step up to the plate and help out. So even an update would be good. It's the deafening silence that frustrates.

I am off to Romania for a month so cannot do anything till early November but would be happy to do a bit of scanning then. What are the technical requirements?

Cheers

Backing what Mr Johnston opens with, I would be interested if these images have been sanctioned for web use by the committee.
Like Sven, I have a complete J2. Mine has been rebuilt atrociously, with a catalogue of non factory parts.
It is being amended, part by part.
I have always put the case for a good database to draw upon.
The Dutch MG MMM fellows have produced a brilliant, modern source to draw from.
I sent Nick Octagon Heaven files the other year. I am in contact with one of the original contributors to George's comprehensive (but not 100% correct) dossier.
Although George died some time back, I am awaiting some more details from the USA.
Nick asked if I could involve myself ironing out the discrepancies in O.H....
How can I? I don't have an original car for comparison.
I am quite happy rebuilding a J2 that would never bother with a concours line up. Why? Investment? Not concerned with that aspect. I am leaving it to my boy.
I would, however... Like to try and rebuild it as a faithful 1933 machine.
Original factory photographs are the only sources that really provide the facts. As opposed to 80 years of schools of thought. If original sources are in existence- You have to start there.
