Sam,

I don't know the book, but I have a friend with a fair sized collection of Ford books. I'm working on it.

Cheers,

Sam,

No joy. My friend checked his library without success.

Sorry.

I'm sorry that I can't assist in the name of the book.
However, the following e-mails might be of interest to you.

Subject: MG M-Type I - still in collection?

Hello,

Would it be possible for you to confirm an on going question in our
motoring group of the MG fraternity?

In 1930 or there about's Mr. Ford on one of his visits to England
purchased an MG M-Type I believe this was a present for his son. I'm under
the impression that the Ford Museum still have this particular car in
there possession.

Can you please confirm this and is it possible to relay the engine and
chassis number details?

Any information on this inquiry would be gratefully received.

Thanking you in advanced.

Brian Kelly.

Mr. Kelly:
Thank you for contacting the Benson Ford Research Center. We are happy to answer questions about the collections of The Henry Ford. We have only a 1947 MG-TC in our collections at this time. We did have a 1929 MG Midget Open Sports 2 Seater in our collections that was sold at auction on September 18, 1982. The car was owned by Edsel Ford and donated to the museum back in 1933. The engine number for the car is M-G-563-A, Serial No. 2-M-812, Model 8-33. It doesn't say anywhere in our files that the car was purchased by Henry Ford on one of his trips. It sounds as if Edsel had it imported on his own. Let me know if you have any questions.

Sincerely,

Carol Whittaker

Lew, thankyou for trying .It may be that I saw this car not in a biography of Henry Ford but in an MG book.It was a very long time ago that I saw the picture and I have the impression that I had the chance to buy the book but did not.I have not given up.

Brian, thanks to Lew I know that the 'Edsel M-type' still exists stored in a private collection in Connecticut and owned by a doctor who has proved difficult to communicate with. The car is said to have 7000 miles on the clock ! The information on chassis number etc is most useful.

Many thanks to both of you for your help.I will let you know as soon as I solve this mystery.

Just a thought . I wonder if the Ford Museum has any photographs of the car? It would seem very odd if they did not.

No doubt they do. I would try contacting the person from whom Brian received the reply.

Cheers,

Sam,

I didn't find the picture, but I did find a reference. It's in the Anders Clausager book "MG, The Book of the Car". On pages 84-85 it says "... and this was going to join a 1930 M-type Midget - originally bought by Henry's father - in the Ford Museum."

A couple of those facts appear wrong (1930?, Henry's father?).

Now you have me going, so I'm continuing to look through my MG books.

Cheers,
Lew

And another reference in Joseph H. Wherry's book "MG, The Sports Car Supreme", on page 42:

"The M-Type brought MG international fame; one early customer was Henry Ford's son, Edsel."

Well, I am pleased to say that Carol Whittaker has replied to my request for information to say that the Benson Ford Research Center has photographs of the Edsel M-type and it is possible to obtain copies. I am sure a little more research with the Center would clarify the car's history . The chance of pictures of the car plus the chassis and engine numbers could only be bettered by a detailed study of the car as it is today (or owning it). Thanks again .

This picture appeared in "The Ford Dynasty" by James Brough . It is not the photograph which I recall seeing (though memory may be playing tricks).Henry Ford II sits behind the wheel of the M-type.

And below is the same car when it was in the care of the Dearborn Ford Museum. It still has its original upholstery and is painted 'cream' today.

I seem to remember when we were in Concord, Massachusetts on the New England raid in 2006, at Chris Nowlan's near Amherst for a big get-togeter with local T-Type and Triple-M owners ,there was an American we met who said he owned the Edsel Ford M-Type. Peter Ross might know who it was.

Lew, was the Doctor in Conn. who purchased Edsel's M type Curtis Beck?
I thought that the Ford auction back then sold two famous MGs and one was purchased by Curtis. The other ,he also bid on, but did not get and it was shortly there after destroyed or badly damaged by fire, Curtis told me this many years ago, and the details are now hazy.

There is a Article in "Safety Fast" May and July/Sept 1959 about the M-type in the Ford museum, and the story about the radiator-cap, which was lost, and replaced by the Detroit Centre.
Photo shows the members of the Detroit Centre in the museum.
Can send copy of the two articles to interested by e-mail.

Curtis Beck definatley has the Ford M-type - he told me this when we met on the MMM Raid in 2006.
Cyril Mellor of 14/40 fame has actually ridden in the car, some years ago. I have a pic of this - but as my scanner is u/s I can't post it on the site

This particular M-Type and it's owner, Curt Beck, attended the MG 2006 event in Gatlinburg, Tennessee. Photo from the NAMMMR Newsletter, Summer 2006.

1929 M-Type. 2M0812. Notation; "2,700 original miles."
