Hi all,

This is my first post to the forum as a new MMM owner. Actually, only a J2 frame owner right now - not much look at yet, but pretty neat for a university student.

I'm trying to track down the original registration number. The build sheet for this car indicates that the car was delivered on 29/4/1933 to University Motors. The guarantee card shows that the car was sold to Mr. George Taylor on 4/5/1933 by (to the best of my interpretation of the handwriting) Beacon Ltd. At the bottom of this car it is stamped with a "U.M.", which makes me think this is a marking of University Motors.

Is there any record of cars sold by University Motors or if this is even a University Motors car.

J3140

Thanks for your thoughts,

Phillip Metcalf in cold and rainy Ohio

Hello Phillip welcome to this Forum and congratulations on becoming a J2 owner. Sounds like you have a long journey ahead but I am sure that you can rely on the members of this forum for any help and support you need along the way.
With regard to your registration number I believe one of our members does have a list of cars sold by UM and will no doubt respond. However I can tell you that quite a lot of cars with MG numbers were in fact sold by other dealers around the country. I believe an arrangement existed for other dealers to pay a little extra to order a car through UM who would then register it with one of their retained MG numbers before it went to the selling dealer. Someone once told me that there was a charge of £10 for this but I don't know whether that is factual.
I am sure I have seen mention of a Beacon Ltd as an MG dealer but do not know where they were located. Maybe another member can confirm this.
Good luck.

J3140 is on the register (2519)? I had this car down as having been restored (?) in the early 90s, having been through a USA/Switzerland/UK/USA route in the process. I have some correspondence on the car which I will try & dig out for you Philip. Last known owner was a Mr Feiber in the USA in 2001. I do not have a current, or original registration number for your car.

If you drop our Registrar (Robin) a line, he may have some further details and good luck with the rebuild.

I have this number recorded as well on the North American Triple-M Register as having been sold by Lawrie Alexander. I have no registration number recorded but there is a note that it was restored by Mike Allison.

The following chassis numbers are taken from Julian Evers book on MG numbers from University Motors. There are many more recorded MG numbers for cars between the numbers quoted.

MG 2128 J3182 built 5 April 33 registered 2 June 33
MG 2372 J3200 " 8 April 33 " 27 April 33
MG 2374 J3104 " 27 March 33 " 12 April 33
MG 2411 J3152 " 31 March 33 " 1 May 33
MG 2413 J3193 " 5 April 33 " 2 May 33
MG 2434 J3144 " 30 March 33 " 1 May 33
MG 2473 J3179 " 5 April 33 " 18 May 33

So there appears to be no correlation between build date, MG number and/or registration date!
Interesting, but sorry, not much help!

Mike, does this info include PA2052 (DPB 140)? I know my car went through UM but know no more, any info gratefully received!

Graham

Thanks for the responses.

I acquired this frame from Mr. Feiber. The frame came to him with a batch of J2 parts from Gerry Goguen that were used in the restoration of his other J2.
Lew- the history as I know it suggests that it was in the hands of Mike Allison at one point. The frame is clean and powder coated, so maybe it was restored or to be restored- who knows!
Terry- that is a very interesting point that one could order a car through UM from another dealer. That would make sense that this is the case should it have a MGXXXX reg. number.

At any rate, I appreciate the help and enjoy learning the history of J3140 with hopes that someday I come up with a reg. number.

Thank you!

Hello Graham,
The short answer is no, as there are only MG numbers.
MG 3897 PA 1922 MG 4027 PA 1328
MG 3921 PA 0915 MG 4028 PA 1419
MG 3940 PA 2063 MG 4068 PA 2031
MG 3945 PA 1875 MG 4163 PA 2047
Again, no logical order!

Thanks Mike. You mention Julian Evers book, presumably he got his info from UM documentation, do you know of any such sources? I don't know Julian, is he contactable?
