Hello all, There is a J2 with a Brookland body for sale on classiccarforsale, registration number MG 1896. Does anyone has some informations about this car, is it an original one or a "later" replica ? The car seems to have a racing history ? Happy Easter Christophe Cuny #PB360

Christophe, It might be J2115. If so, it doesn't have a Brooklands racing history. It did however do the 1934 JCC Brooklands Rally in the hands of first owner E. Hight, where it gained a 2nd class award. It's for sale in Spain, so perhaps there is a bit of a translation issue? The body is recent, in period it was std J2 and the history of the car is far from continuous (according to my records), being "picked over" by a number of owners/dealers in the 70s/80s. When it was up for sale in 1984 it still looked like a std J2, when for sale in 1986 the (now different body) was claimed to be Ex Nigel Musselwhite - not yet another Pheobe?
At the end of the day; it's a lot of money for a special.....

As you say Jeremy, this car might be J 2115. Your Dad's notes suggest that it might also be J 3115, which presumably carried the same Registration Number at some stage in its career. Mike's notes add that J2115 was the University Motors car, which I take to mean that it bore the "MG" Registration plate from new.
The implication that "only 100 of these Brooklands bodies exist" is I think very misleading. The body is similar to the current crop of T/Qs running about, which had little if anything to do with the Works, and even less to do with Brooklands. It might help the car to sell, but at 53 Grand ? I doubt it.

Dear Jeremy and Colin The Spanish owner told me that it was the original body and not a replica. I have never seen a body like that on a J2 The chassis number is J 21...he didn't give me the last digits... As you say it's a big amount for a replica but prices are going creazy, a C type rep. is also for sale by trade at 55 Grand ! It's easy to tell a story but easier to check with the Club the real thing, I think it's important to know what we're going to pay for ! Christophe C

MG 1896 is the correct number plate for J 2115. Original engine number should be 501AJ but the one shown here looks like a P type engine. J2115 was built originally as a 2 seater, as per standard J2. There are no notes suggesting otherwise. The first owner was a D Niven.
