Recently some J2 items came up for sale on eBay in the U.S.A. including a "J2 Oil Pan Spacer'' which looked like this…..and before anyone else says it, yes, there must have been a slight oil leak.
It could be a casting.
I do not know, but my guess is that it was used to allow a 'J' sump to be fitted to an M-type without modification. Are M-type sumps so rare and J sumps so common?
I believe the aim was to lower the sump by means of a spacer thus enabling a larger quantity of oil to be held within the enlarged sump capacity. A similar arrangement was incorporated into the sump of the K3s. Perhaps the spacer was fitted to a 12/12 or C type?
While the spacer was advertised with a selection of J2 parts it could have fitted a selection of MG engines. The extra capacity idea sounds convincing and quite appealing.
I would say that the reason for this spacer was to bring the sump deeper down into the airstream for better cooling. At least this makes sense on a K3, where it was a standard equipment for the already huge 2 galls. sump. Gerhard
