Is mine the only Triple M car without a chassis number on the bonnet hinge?

As far as I am aware all the Triple-M cars had the chassis number stamped on the bonnet.

Of course that is possible, Onno. I know the car's history except for the 1937-1961 period, and there is no evidence or testimony of any reason to replace the bonnet. During most or all of the unknown period it believed to have been in Germany, where a replacement bonnet might have been hard to find.

Also, the engine number and displacement are stamped on the original water manifold, something I have not seen elsewhere.

None of my M types have had the bonnet stamped. Not even the colour reference.

AS I understand it the chassis number and colour code were stamped on the bonnet so that it got painted the right colour in the factory where it was separated from the rest of the car.

Thus...

if the car was not painted in the factory no number was necessary on the bonnet and this was the case on the cars with alternative coachwork such as Stiles etc.

There would always have been exceptions because if there are rules they get broken every now and then... but alternatively your car had alternative coachwork. there is talk of a Stiles bodied P...

Cheers

Precision, please.

The bonnet and the hinge - where my car is stamped - are different components.

Bob.

Olli the C does not have a centre hinge to stamp ! John I am sure your J3 is not the only Triple M car without a hinge number ! I have seen others and also cars with just the 4 chassis number digits, no colour reference.

presumably not all bonnets ( + hinges )had to be taken away to be trimmed and re-painted. Some perhaps fitted without the necessity for trimming - hence no need to stamp ??? Q.E.D. Rich

John, perhaps the man at the factory responsible for stamping the bonnet hinge simply forgot it on your car - and perhaps he was also a bit unreliable - that might explain why a few numbers on other bonnet hinges are incomplete...;;))

If it's any comfort, when I was Registrar I photographed stampings on as many cars as I could get at. The frequency with which I found original matching bonnet stampings was much less than 50%. Not only may some not have been factory stamped but over the years car bonnets get opened and closed thousands of times and many have replacement hinges and or bonnet tops. My PA is one such car.

And my J2 has no trace anywhere of a number on the bonnet hinge and I'd be surprised if it was a replacement.

I think Olli has become unhinged..... And I don't agree with Terry either. My C's bonnet has a hinge. Or perhaps it's a crease. Or a fold. Either way, it has no numbers stamped on it. Just the impression of a pair of goggles. No idea how it got there....

My J bonnet has a feint impression of a windscreen frame on it, Though original, it was embossed one dark night in 1977 after an "incident".......
