I'm looking for a pair of SU carbs for my PA. The ones that I have at the moment are tired and need lots spent on them, so before I go down that route I thought I would ask if anyone has any in good condition. Ideally 1 1/8. Many thanks Jonathan |

I don't think I've ever encountered an SU that was so worn out it couldn't be rebuilt with a kit from Burlen! If they're the originals, stick with them ![](images/icon_smile.gif) |

What advantages, exactly, would 1 1/8" carbs give to a PA?
Why weren't they fitted originally?

From Mike Hawke's article in the 1973 yearbook, a small power increase...

Graham - thanks for the reference - now carefully read. I have had a pair, with blended manifold, in the shed for years, but for a tiny increase in power at higher revs they have never seemed worth the effort of changing over.
They would have cost MG about the same as the 1", so I imagine the factory didn't think them worth adding to a standard car either.
Interestingly, while admitting to no experience, MH advises a supercharger, as originally fitted, by MG, to my car.

My own experience of 1 1/8" carbs on my J2 would suggest that unless fitted to a modified engine - in my case higher compression and BJ Super Sports cam - the larger carbs would not offer any improvement in performance in day to day driving. And they might well exhibit flat spots when the throttle is opened at low revs due to the larger bore and consequent lower gas flow speeds.

My son heavily into his 1968 Morris Minor van has tuned his carb and plans to do the same to my MMM 1' ones. He expects an improvement of some magnitude sufficient to make it worth doing, so no need for 11/bth ones...
Cheers

The article was written by MBH in 1973 - In latter years he was influenced by an enthusiastic youth who showed him the teachings of the Great Guru Vizzard. In an area of what are arguably minor gains and losses, he reverted to a 2 x 1" set up, going for the broader power delivery it afforded.
Unblown MMM & Power - there's an oxymoron....

In response to Jonathan's original post.
About 6 months ago I changed my original 1" Carbs for 1 1/8" ones on my PA. At the same time I converted to electronic ignition. There seems to be, without measuring, a reasonable improvement in performance.
I am not proposing to refit the original 1" ones, which were reconditioned some 6000 miles ago, and am therefore happy to let them go.
They are complete with all linkages etc. I attach a photo of them as fitted.
Price? Perhaps £275 the pair.
If Jonathan doesn't want them I will put them on "Parts for Sale".
