Hi John
I believe the glass should be frosted, when I bought my L2 it had clear glass and it looked all wrong!
I obtained the correct frosted glass from Gregory's Autoparts.

Thanks George,
Currently I am using frosted glass but unfortunately It does not give a good beam even though I am using modern quartz halogen 35/35w bulbs.

John, when using a modern quartz halogen bulb, often the bulb is not quite in the position of the optimal focus, because those bulbs are shorter than our old fashioned bulbs. (By the way - - what type of halogen 35/35w bulbs did you choose ?)
I had to pull my halogen bulbs a great deal forward by using a metal bulb holder of the long type variant. But now the beam is convincing, even with the frosted glass. Gerhard |

John, When I installed quartz halogen bulbs I used the type with axial filaments. These produced a well focused beam with the original bulb holders with a good dipped beam which fully satisfied my MOT tester.. I couldn't get the transverse filament bulbs to work so didn't persevere with them.

Gordon,
Can you give a bit more information about the axial filament bulbs you used, i.e. wattage and make? I can't seem to find a source for them.
Thanks.

Gerhard, I have refocused the quartz bulbs as best as I can. The bulbs where supplied by Peter Jury who runs Classic Dynamo & Regulator Conversions. He does a lot of work for members of the VSCC. The filaments appear to be symmetrical. Even though George says clear glass looks all wrong I may try them just to see what the effect is.

Hi John, if you need new frosted glass with the original "LUCAS" printing I can recommend you this link http://www.vintage-replica.cz/205.E.htm The diameter of the glas for a 8 inch head lamp is 197mm. Carl J2 4362 L2 2036 |
