A neighbour who has a J2 has a problem. The engine pulls well up to about 3/4 throttle but further opening up produces a reduction in power. The only clue is that no 2 plug suggests it is not firing properly although there is no audible evidence of misfiring. The head has been off recently due to a failed gasket and the valve seats have been lapped, the compression pressures are about 100 psi on all four cylinders. He has changed the plug, the lead, and the condenser and also looked in the dark for stray sparks to no avail. It sounds to me like fuel starvation but any help will be greatly appreciated.

Maurice that could be any one of a large number of possible problems. A list would take up too much space here but I did one for someone else recently and will E mail it to you separately.

Have you double checked the cam gear and pinion timing. I once got this a tooth out on reassembly and I had exactly the same symptoms including the odd plug going lazy.
