Chris,

The number should be the chassis number of the car that the bonnet was originally fitted to, and the CR with an additional tang on the C probably denotes Green. At http://www.triple-mregister.org/forums/topic.asp?ARCHIVE=true&TOPIC_ID=5229&whichpage=2&SearchTerms=bonnet there were other such examples, which might suggest that the Works didn't have a 'G' stamp at the particular time so created one out of a 'C'...

At least I now know that the second car was green, the first ( main ) car was red which was J2353, so the second car was 1700 + cars later, that's why I have both vacuum and electric wiper motors, but only one later windscreen with the electric motor fixing holes, unless there is another in the lockup. Also the first car had a rev counter fitted as an extra. Finding one dismantled J2 is bad enough..but two and all mixed together !!!

According to Mike Hawkes 75 years of the J2, J4129 was sold by Waddington Motors NW6 to DH Cottingham who gained 2nd Class Awards in the March 1935 JCC Brooklands Rally and the West Hants AC Trial. He says there is no later news of the car.
So you may have a car with some competition history Chris.

Now that would make some sense. I found amongst the items in the lock up a rev counter ( in very poor condition and no needle ) similar to the one recently I bought on ebay made by ' The Speedometer Supply Company Ltd ' , I sold the one I had and bought the one off ebay for practically the same money which is much better condition. I have also a registration plate with the number ALX 124, but have no idea of its prominence, that could have been the second cars ( 4129 ) I will now start a research. The engine block I have may also be from 4129, it does not match the first cars engine block numbers. If 4129 disappeared around 1963 then this was Michael Birds second car which he also dismantled, in view of this information I will now attempt to build the second car also, a good start is the bonnet ! Attached photos are the items possibly from 4129, block, cream gauge cluster with the unusual MG motif on the bottom right. The dashboard with the cutout for the rev counter. The block number is 1019JA 72 Does this tie up with 4129 ? Thanks.

Photos attached, Angela Bird with the number plate and some of the items in the lock up with both red and white panel colours. The rev counter from ebay that was similar to the one I sold.

Chris,

I think that block 1019 AJ 72 is from a much earlier car than J4129. At a guess I think it would have been somewhere around J2400.

It is also nice that the Registration number ALX 124 has now turned up. Mike Hawke had identified it as having been allocated to a J, but he did not know which one. He has also identified J4129 as having had some competition history as mentioned by Terry but he had not been able to confirm the registration number of the car involved. Seems likely that the answer has now been found - J 4129. All we need now is a photograph or two of D H Cottingham driving the car in the 1935 Brooklands Rally or in the West Hsnts Automobile Club Trial in the same year, and the search will be complete.

Thanks Colin, Any photos or further information would be the icing on the cake. My thanks also to Simon Johnson, without finding the rev counter and contact through Patrick Henry, I would not have looked for the numbers on the bonnet hinge. I will be passing on this information to Angela in a few weeks when we will be meeting for lunch. Also confirmation that I have spare parts from other cars is interesting ( ref. the block ), so maybe more items to excavate will help with some unsolved history. The first photo is the view in the lock up as best I could get.The Kithead records show that J2353s first owners address was ' The Castle Hotel, Cambridge ', the Hotel is now a Weatherspoons. I have found the attached postcard which shows the original hotel.

..nearest I will get to winning the lottery is probably finding 2+ J2s and one with competition history. You are welcome down in Brighton any time after July, I will be in Cyprus until then.

Engine 1019AJ is from J2414, a car that still exists - with a different engine (not a F**d).
