The latest Safety Fast! carries a tribute to Lou Shorten who, sadly, died on 3 April in Norwich.
Lou established the Norfolk 'MG Specialists' business in 1964 with her husband John and was most associated with post-war Magnettes. In the 60s she was instrumental in establishing an East Anglian Magnette group, which eventually led to the formation of the Magnette Register in 1974, of which she became President in 2001.
Lou and John additionally had Triple-M interests. Many will recall that they brought Lou's delightfully original and unspoilt F2 Magna (the Works publicity car) to MG90 where it attracted considerable attention in the 90-year Time Line.

Sympathies are extended to John, who himself has recently been in hospital.

Very sorry to hear that Lou has died. My condolences to John.
About 50 years ago JB658, the Works demonstrator F2, was advertised for sale in Exchange and Mart. I went to see it and agreed to buy it, to return the following week with the money and to drive it away. Unfortunately during the week the owner had taken it for a spin (literally!) and rolled it, squashing the windscreen and damaging the bodywork. He reduced the price to £25 but I declined, not wanting to take on what I saw as quite a lot of work. That's when Lou bought it, though I didn't know this until I met up with Lou and John at a recent MG Silverstone. Happy Days.

I went to Lou's funeral, which was a nice celebration of her fascinating life (too much to recount here!) She was a true original and the reminiscences of family members revealed some stuff that I wasn't even aware of. The family was very well supported by Car Club members and the ceremony was so well attended that not everyone could sit down. Lou was escorted from her Lenwade home to the crematorium by a cavalcade of twelve Z Magnettes, which parked in formation on arrival.
