Hi Manfred,

Grade 140 straight - I use Penrite. It's generally reckoned that EP (extreme pressure) oils should not be used.

I use Castrol Classic D140 which is made specifically for the older cars.

Or Morris Golden Film AG140 which is stated by Morris Lubricants to have no EP additives and thus to be safe where there are phosphor-bronze components and ideal for classic and vintage cars.

Cheers,

I changed from 140 to Redline Lightweight Shockproof in the J2 and the improvement in smoothness when changing gear - especially from cold - is incredible. I wouldn't think of using anything else now.

I am with you Simon. Having received a number of recomendations from people I trust, I now use Redline Shockproof Heavyweight. This has the consistency range of 75 - 250 and when cold is very thin. At the "hot" end Redline specify it for use in truck racing and 4x4 extreme conditions, so I reckoned that it should be alright for the prodigious power being put out by the 847cc PA engine. It also looks so nice - like strawberry mousse, although I haven't tried tasting it yet. Very easy to spot where the leaks are.

I use the heavy shockproof strawberry milkshake in my back axle (and blower gears) - excellent stuff!

Hi Simon & Colin- Redline sounds good, but Lightweight or Heavyweight for my standard PA? Have used Penrite in the past, but gear changes are noisy until the oil has warmed up- a loose nut on the drivers seat no doubt.

My understanding is that for the gearbox, the Lightweight is appropriate, but for the back axle, use the Heavyweight. The former is light blue in colour. I didn't bother changing the axle oil as I really couldn't see what benefits it would bring. I doubt I'd notice any slight reduction in friction or drag and it seemed to me that the risk of leakage of the lower viscosity oil was not worth taking.

I had been using Heavy Shockproof oil in the gear box of the PB for about 6 months.
I found that it had made gear changing slightly easier, but found the box noisy.

So changed back to 140 gear oil two weeks ago.

The back axel is still using Heavy Shockproof oil, I am watching it closely to see if the slightly thinner oil, finds it's way into the rear brakes.

On the F Type box I ue EP90 in preference to 140. The tourer should be back with the thinner oil shortly so I will give a fuller report then...

I've used Redline Heavy Shockproof in both gearbox and back axle of J2 for 18 months. The box is much smoother and quieter and less effort to use when cold.
I've had no problems with the box or rear axle. This oil does find it's way out of odd places e.g. speedo cable fitting, but never onto my rear brakes.
NB It is important not to use (MG specified) 1 1/2 pts of oil in the back axle - 1pt is plenty.
