Can the forum help please. I received an email possibly from Michael Allison which stated that he had sent me a file from Dropbox. Michael has been looking into his files for any information on D.H.Cottingham and this may have been some information he has found. My computer will not allow the file to be opened and I am concearned that this may be a spam email. I have tried to email Michael but no reply. If there is some fresh information on Cottingham or his competition history I don't wish it to be lost, but I wouldn't wish to compromise Michaels files either. My research into Cottinghams ancestry would suggest that the family moved to Canada at some stage.

Chris,

If you used your email login and password to log in to the spurious Dropbox account linked from the email from Mike Allison's account I suggest you change your email password pronto.

Have found some ' Cottingham ' Memorial articles in Autosport magazines from 1950 and 1951, wonder how long this memorial trial was active ?

As part of my research into D.H.Cottingham and J4129, his involvement with the Harrow Car Club prompted me to contact the Club which is still running. I was sent the history of the Club by Nick Cook, the competitions secretary ' Harrow Car Club:The First 50 Years '
Reference .....Page 8 : Trials in the mid-thirties featured Club teams, and for the Berkhampstead and District Clubs Winwood Cup Trial in February 1935 Harrow entered two teams, one being D.H.Cottingham, F.J.Coyne and W.L.Jackson. The other D.K.Buckle, L.M.Maynard and A.W.Jones.

.......The AGM took place in October, and November started with a Dinner at which Earl Howe was guest of honour.

....Page 9....The restricted trial held on the 24th was for the Cottingham Memorial Trophy, Dudley Cottingham having been killed in an accident leaving the dinner at the Orchard ( evening of the 5th & 6th April 1935 ).The first Cottingham Memorial Trial had Mr.Coyne as organiser, and forty nine entries were received. The Harrow team was W.L.Jackson, Mrs A.E.Moss ( mother of Stirling ) and A.C. Westwood. A protest by A.G.Imhof was not upheld. Blown MGs were the car of the day and the Club fielded a team of these in the hands of W.L.Jackson, D.N.Leon and D.L.Briault.
Also Stirling, sister Pat Moss, and their parents are mentioned as having lots of associations with the Club.
....Page 16.....For a short period between February and May of 1935 Mr.D.H.Cottingham held office as secretary. He died in a car accident with his passenger, Miss Gush, returning home after the Club's dinner at the Orchard. The Memorial Trophy was subscribed by his friends in the Club, with a substantial amount contributed to the fund by his mother.

Its fair to assume that W.L.Jackson is the same friend of Cottingham who came across their crashed car on that fated return home from the Orchard. I am hopeful of maybe photos from the HCC archive.

..1984 lists of HCC Awards. for Marshals only : The Cottingham Trophy.

I rather like the implicit dress code rebuke in the caption to the last photo - "Owner-builder-driver Onslow Bartlett is conspicuous by reason of open-necked shirt."

Onslow Bartlett was known by some as "Onshow Barechest" ! Very much an M.G. man in his earlier life, he had a PB - now owned by Roger Buttery in Hampsshire, and an NA, now owned by our very own Competition Secretary Mike Linward.

I also note that Gerry Pentony was driving his "Cyclops" - so named because it had three headlights. I wonder where that has gone to. In the late thirties, Cream Cracker and Three Musketeer team driver Macdermid built a trials special which I think also had three headlights, and I wonder whether that was the car driven by Pentony in the 50s and 60s. Gerry also had a number of M.G.s including a much campaigned J2, chassis number J4136 - reg. number PO 8865 which is now in the Patrick Gardner stable and comes out to play quite frequently.

Hi Chris,

Wouldn't that be good, finish the car, enter the trial and win the cup ;-)

Now that would be " icing "

In reply to a request from Nick Cook of the Harrow Car Club, I have put together this letter for their club magazine. I have copied here for the interest of those who have helped with my research and other MMM club members.

Moderator : I realise that there are the email addresses of enthusiasts who have helped with my research. Please remove the article if you consider this causes a problem or offends, this is how the find unfolded. Thanks. C

A small addition to your file, found while browsing December 1950 'Motor Sport'. Sadly no MGs, but Gof Imhof was of course a well known MG exponent.

Regards,
Graham
