Hi all,
In a recent conversation, the above name cropped up as the name of a single seater J type racing car, presumably because it was painted blue.
Can anybody shed any light as to what car this was and if it still survives.
It was evidently turned into a singe seater just pre war.
Regards Ron

A s/c J1 single seater, painted blue, graced the sprints and hillclimbs about 10 years ago - as far as I am aware this car was rebuilt by Len Bull and raced by Anthony Howatt. Havenīt heard of or seen this car for a while. Donīt know whether this is the "blue bottle".

Hi Christian,
I know the car that Len Bull built a few years ago, but I have just realised I did not say that it was built just pre war and was running probably up to the 1950's, so in effect a historic car, am sure some of our more mature members must have heard of it.

Hi Ron,

A Riley 9 Special raced in the mid '30's was named "Bluebottle". It was from somewhere in the N of England. Is there a connection ?

Wasn't there a J Single seater, One of speed record holders, sold last year. I recall a photo of Jeremy Hawke driving? JMH you out there?

Think it was a 90's creation actually.

Millbrook Speed Records

Wonder where it went?

Hi All,
This pic is of the John Bannell car which is again a pretty modern creation, although with obviously a good modern history.
Not the one I am "looking" for.

But it also had a pre-war trials history too.

It didn't sell at Brightwells.

As to the mystery s/s "bluebottle", I have a pic of an unknown J type s/s that might fit the bill. I'll dig it out next time I venture into the cave.

Another car for the list: a single seat J-type (J3751), built prewar (1938) and racing into the 50s/60s, looks to be blue at Silverstone

I have no idea if it was ever called "Bluebottle", perhaps JMH has a note on file in the cave.
Cheers, Tim

This was the photo I was thinking of, however it's a 2-seater rather than s/s. Interesting though.

JH

Anyone recognise the car?

Looks very pre-war except for what looks like an early 50's Morris Minor in the shed behind the 2 Duffel coated chaps. RV is a Portsmouth number.
