My guess would be an N special looking at the width of axles and radiator and 12" brakes. Looks possibly the IOM. But who knows!!

The venue is Cape Town. I believe the MG is one raced by the late Phillip Costa. I shall ask Ralph Clarke. He might have been in the MG slightly to the rear.

Regards,

Rod.

Just beat me to it Rodney. Cape Town indeed,
Hope the N is coming along well,
Very best wishes
David
Mark, using the "snipping tool" allows you to take a cropped screen shot of whatever you have on the monitor. (may be a case of Grandmother and eggs, if so my apologies)

The following is taken from the official Programme of the South African National MMM MG Gathering held at Franschhoek in 2013 and relates to the late Philip Costa's numerous M.G.s.:-

"Philip soon found another M.G., a 6 cylinder in an abandoned condition in a barn. Philip built up this L2 Magna for racing and with its six AMAL carburettors and six exhaust pipes straight through the bonnet it was a mean machine. The L2 was used in trials and was raced in the 2nd Van Riebeek Trophy at Gunners Circle but retired with engine problems. The L2 was sold in 1952." I believe that this was in 1949.

Philip also drove in the 1st Van Riebeek Trophy Race which was held on the 5th October 1948 at Paarden Elland driving his very much lightened J2 and won the race ahead of Frank Hoal's Riley, Ian Fraser-Jones' Jaguar SS100 and Dougie Van Riet in an Austin Works Racer.

From the date, it looks as if the car in the photograph could be the late Philip Costa's J2 rather than the L2. The programme quotes "The Van Riebeeck Trophy at Paarden Elland on the 5th October 1948 was the first post-war motor race held in the Cape. Philip prepared his J2 CJ3003 for the 48 mile handicap event. He focussed on making the J2 as light as possible - all unnecessary body parts were removed, a Perspex windscreen fitted, the battery was discarded and for ignition, fitted a magneto. In place of the fuel pump, he pressurised the fuel tank with a bicycle pump !

As previously mentioned Philip won the race against strong opposition. Unfortunately at a later date, in 1949 the J2 was totally destroyed in a fire.

I have received the following info from Ralph Clarke via Ted Borchards. Thanks Ralph and Ted !

Number 9 is Sam Tingle in his "P type Special". In inverted commas because it is actually a J2. Sam became very well known in Southern Africa , racing his single seaters into the '60's. His final race car was an LDS titled with a 2.7 Climax and later a 3.0 l Repco engine.

In 1946 Sam started racing his J2 with ihis homemade lightweight body. Early in 1948 he fitted the 12" brakes and engine from his PB. The remains of the PB were sold to Ralph Clarke. The J2 Special became known as a P type Special , but is obviously inaccurate. ! Sam raced this car in Angola , Mozambique , South Africa and his own country , Rhodesia.

The driver behind Sam's "P" / J2 Special , is Phillip Costa , with the white head gear , in his lightened J2.

Cheers,

Rod Green.
