Just found in an old album, father-in-laws "old MG" Taken we think in '39 - '41 in rural Wales.
He thought it might have been a J type but couldn't remember at the time and there doesn't seem to be any evidence of it surviving on the register, unless the reg' was taken and used elsewhere?
Any thoughts?

Funny!, just noted the brakes are bigger than a normal J so possibly an L type?

L types usually had swept wings and the headlamp brackets were fitted through the radiator surround not in front. Latish F type?

Did not all 4 seater F Types have rear hinged doors with only a minimal cut-down of the top leaving a horizontal line?

Could well be an F3.

The car is not listed in the Register and a search of the Register files does not show the Registration FS 4310.
So - a mystery car but a I think a J1 as the line of the doors is not correct for the F types.

That would make sense Peter, because the D/F1 body and the cut down door J1 body are interchangeable except for an added un-handed and rather crude chassis bracket just under the dash. The first J1 was July32, and the first F3 September32, by which time they had probably run out of the earlier bodies anyway. Interesting mud flaps too.

Hi gb Very interesting photo? Any more? There are several photos of an identical car with the registration YY8471 on the 'F' Type Registry website which, alas, has also not yet been identified. I2" brakes and 'F' type wings and the same 'J1'style body. Could it be that the factory ran out of 'D' type bodies while the 'F3' was still in production or fitted 'J1' bodies later as replacements? If anyone can identify either of these cars please let me know. Ian www.fmagna.org.uk |

Dear Forum and Ian :
Ian your observations are very interesting ,as always. My thoughts were more along the lines of a rebuild or heavy modification. Maybe after a crash. Owners have always" improved" there cars. The urge is to great. Still not sure of the date of the photograph. Can you help. I like your answer much better. Can you give examples of others cars.? Numbers? How were they sold?. Thank-you and the forum for a interesting thread. All the best. John Bakewell

Hi All,
I had a J1 here in Australia that had what looked like a D or F body it was a very early car.In the brochure at the time advertising the J1 it shows the D or F type body - you can get copies of this brochure from the store. I sold the car to buy a F1. |

Thanks all for the input, observations and general thoughts about the car.
The general consensus is an Ftype, possibly F3 with either a replaced rear body, or potentially a cross over from F to L type body on the F chassis!
For Ian's Ross's benefit, we believe there may be another/other pics of the car in an old photo album somewhere, but so far not located.
Thanks
Glenn
