I’m not sure of the location of Castle Garage. The M Type appears to be new with blank registration plates. Just thought it was a nice period photo to share. Ian.

Half a story!! Where is Castle Garage? When was it? What was the chassis number? What colour was the car? What did the driver have for breakfast?

If you look at google street view, it is opposite Morpeth Casle, looking like it is soon to be demolished. It has a Renault sign on it.

Yes Benfield Motors closed their Renault VW dealership 2012 or there abouts leaving a bit of an eye-sore. Castle Garage was on Castle Square which is part of what was the Great North Road A1 on the south bank of the river Wansbeck as it passes through Morpeth, the castle, what remains, is up on the hill to the left behind this property. I know C H Mason’s were agricultural engineer’s in Gateshead in the 20s so presumably this garage was a company development obviously with several car dealerships.

ARe you sure that the Benfield Motors premises were the site we are looking at?
This one round the corner looks a much better candidate to me. Look at the brickwork over the door for example

I think the garage building is the one to the left behind the green shuttering, presumably the closed premises. The windows of the house to the left have wider surrounds, I cannot see the stonework around the door and there are no quoins at the corner of the building. I think too, in the original picture I can see the window on the gable end, also the gutter and downpipes appear the same as in the early picture.
So who bought a new M Type in Morpeth?
Cheers

Clearly a seriously posed photo; look at the petrol pump attendants pose!

Originally there was a pair of nice town houses either side of the lane leading to C H Masons, the one out of shot to the left in the 1930s image is the house with a blue door in StreetView. The town house to the right was destroyed by converting the ground floor into showroom space.
Benfield Motors I believe went right round Waterford Lodge Hotel (annotation in wrong place) as outlined in green, outlined in red is the lane leading to garage. 30s photo taken in direction of red arrow.
It is hard to imagine these days fuel being served on what is now an extremely busy thoroughfare into Morpeth.
If I get a chance I will do some digging in Morpeth the next time I am through.

I think that image puts the location question firmly to bed! |
