I have an amazingly glamorous neighbour who is 97. I was cleaning the J2 the other day when she walked past and said rather casually that she had a photo of herself sitting in her father's J2 in 1938....
I think it is a J2...? Her fathers name was Fred Smith and he lived in West Grinstead West Sussex.
Here it is with Eileen in the drivers seat with a friend. Her son in law is looking for a better picture with hopefully the number plate....
Noting the 8 inch brakes I would say that is a swept wing J2. Interesting that it must be a late car and yet it has the windscreen wiper motor mounted in the middle of the top rail?
I wonder if the glamorous lady in question has any other photo which might show the Registration number?
Had the car been fitted with 12 inch brakes it could have been an L2?
What is amazing is that she still looks very much like the person in the picture. Eighty years later...! She was an Ack -Ack gun instructor in the war.
I was hoping that someone might have known the car...Or have known of Fred Smith....??
The wiper motor does not appear to be the regular Lucas one and judging by its height above the screen you'd have trouble fitting the hood. It looks to be another make of replacement for the central suction motor which was superceded by the electric motor on the left hand side at J3539. However, the external mirror was also introduced at that point but it could easily have been added on along with the electric wiper. So probably between J3438 (introduction of cycle wings) and J3529 (introduction of electric wiper on the left hand side)so likely first registered late August/early September 1933
I think the unusual wiper motor is causing an illusion and I think it is actually on the passenger side;
On my rather poorly marked enlargement, the red line is around twice the length of the yellow one and even allowing for my lack of skill, I think makes the point.
Which would fit with the external mirror, Dave, as both it and the electric wiper were introduced at the same time, together with a revised windscreen frame and off side support bracket. But it certainly doesn't look to be an original Lucas wiper motor.
The first owner of my swept wing J2 (J3656 NJ 2037) lived in Forest Row, which is not far from West Grinstead. It could have changed hands and gone to West Grinstead.
