I found this photo at Beaulieu last (?) year. Perhaps I have posted it before. Whatever. Any details known, especially of the body type? Special body?
Brian.

French number plate by the looks of it. If it is, then 13 is Bouches-du-Rhône. |

Is one of those Swiss bodied specials?

This was the subject of a post last year (31.07.2017) from Christian Cottes. It's J2195.

Dear Brian and Forum:
Great photograph. Have been reading around the topic of specials and there is not much written information. Specials and coachwork cars are rare this much is clear. Very little else. Help with topic please. Fairly sure I am not alone. All the best.

I have written to the owner, Christian Cottes.
Perhaps he will reply to the forum.

I am happy to see a previously unknown (to me) photo of my car. This picture was taken sometime between 1958 and 1963. Brian, any other detail ?
This car is not exactly a special. J2195 was exported to France soon after build in sept 1932. Blue body (as bonnet hinge number still testifies), blue upholstery (remains of door skinning and seats confirm this), and presumably cycle wings like any early J2.
It seems that the swept wings were fitted very soon to the car life in France, as metric size fittings of wings and front apron suggest, and presumably in the Moto-Comptoir body shop in Paris. Moto Comptoir Cy tried to establish themselves as MG French agents, with little success.
Back to the swept wings, my guess is that the owner wished to "modernise" the car to look like the later P types. This is only a guess, but this was common is those times when cars had to last long and still look fashionable.
The rest of the body (by Mulliner) is untouched except for the white paint, "Old English White" ? (It's a joke !). I restored the upholstery in dark red with the assistance of James Collingburn 15 years ago.
By the way, the car is still running nicely, and more than once a year...

Christian and Forum:
Thank-you for latest post. There is not much information on MMM's car in France. So your post is a start. Plus you now have another photograph of your car. Will see where the Mulliner and Moto-comtoir lines take me. As for Old English White it's a MG and period paint color. A creamy white with hints of yellow. Hard to describe now I write it down. But , a real color option and most distinctive. Once seen you will know it. All the best.

Hi Christian, Just a minor correction: If 15 years ago then you restored it with the help of my father Mike Collingburn, I wasn't involved at all then. Cheers James. |

From the age of 14 I used to do things like stuff the seat covers for my Dad to earn my pocket money. Didn't really enjoy it and wondered, why does he need all this junk? He was a life long hoarder of all sorts of interesting things. People used to bring their cars to the vast workshop which was the ground floor of our house. We (My mother, brother, sister and I) just thought they looked old and dated and nothing like the Ferrari or Lamborghini posters on my wall :-) at the time. It was cool being a passenger in his TC though, flying through the Yorkshire dales, down hills and he took me to Germany in it as a boy.

Sorry James for my mistake, and please take it as a compliment. 15 years after fitting, the seats your father supplied are even better than new : they now have a very nice patine. |

Hey, no apology needed. I just didn't want to take the compliment for my father Mike's work. I always show him photos and kind messages from customers. He is 72 now, has Parkinsons but it could be a lot worse. He no longer works but gives me his advice freely and he needs a knee op next. The cartilage has worn away in his right knee and it's bone rubbing on bone. We all think it's years of working inside MGs and weight baring down on his poor old knees and not wearing knee pads. So take note MG owners!!! It has made me look after my knees better.
Regards James Collingburn |
