This is clearly posed photo (high heels when racing?) but could someone say when it was taken and which car Doreen Evans is driving? The caption along with the photo is clearly wrong as it says 'Doreen Evans takes the sash during the Relay Race at Brooklands in 1931. Evans first raced at the circuit aged only 17 and went on to drive for the MG Works team.' Since Doreen Evans was born in 1916 she was hardly racing in 1931.

extract, below...another can of worms!!

NEW CHASSIS FRAME IN 1934
The lot description reads:
“After this race, much of the remains of K3 026 were rebuilt, and it was then sold to Czechoslovakia, where it continued to race until being severely damaged and rebuilt once again using a special chassis made in Czechoslovakia and a Skoda engine, where it remains as a Skoda-engined special, with virtually nothing left from its original origins”.
1. There is no evidence to support the theory that after the Mannin Beg race the MG factory rebuilt K3026 on a new chassis frame. Indeed the evidence indicates that the car was repaired without replacement of its chassis before being shipped to Czechoslovakia. In this respect I, Philippe Douchet, and other well known MMM peoples disagree with the conclusion of the Triple-M Register that K3026 was rebuilt on a replacement K3 chassis by the factory in 1934.It may be possible but to date there is no formal proof that has been given to me.

Let's not go down that road again, Paul

This looks to have been taken at the same time which may help identify the event.

Hmmm ... maybe not as it wouldn't carry 39 in a relay race. But I see from The Hawke History that Doreen Evans drove NA0519 at the LCC Relay Race at Brooklands in July 1934 so that seems like it.

Oops, it was NA 0518, not 0519.

Simon,
The car in your picture is probably the N-type Magnette (NA0633?) which Doreen Evans drove at the LCC Relay Race on 20/7/35.
It may be the same car in the attached photo, taken on another occasion (she sometimes signed her pics "Pauline").
Doreen's entry number in the above race was 1C, 1B being Kenneth Evans in QA0254 single seater, and the R-type in the background with 1A is either RA0251, '3 or '5, driven by team entrant Dennis Evans.
Cheers, Karl

Many thanks, Karl. Just what I needed. I was forgetting that the Evanses used regular cars as well as the racing models.

P.S. Any idea what car is number 39? And the occasion?

#39 looks like Donington 13/4/35,
#9 was Brooklands 5/8/35, 3rd race.
All the same car.

I’m quite sure no. 39 is one of the three trials N-types the Evans Family ran and is therefore not the same car as in the first and third pics.

I won’t point you lads towards Doreen’s missing tooth by the way, for fear of killing your dreams of Adorable Dorie!

No, that's just an advertising poster related to the Mannin Beg races. Not sure what it's referring to, though - what is the '...olex' and what M.G. win is referred to?

Presumably Norman Black’s 1934 win with K3024?!

Car no. 9, I think, is being driven by Denis’ wife Pauline (née Berridge) and is therefore signed thus.

Probably referring to Norman Black's win there in 1934 and Triplex seemed to be common advertisers at Brooklands at the time.

Keith

Thanks, folks. I'd have got there eventually but this saved me a lot of time. Much appreciated as it's for an article I'm editing for another journal!
