I would very much like to know what type of MG it is, I was originally thinking F2 but I’m now leaning towards a J2.
He drove this car on his way to the airfield on the night of 6th June 1944 and was involved in a prang, it was taken to a garage but it was the last time he ever drove it as he was shot down and killed over Normandy that very night.
It would be great to find out if the car still exists, if not would the DVLA still hold the reg. number?

Hello, Ian.
I’m pretty sure the car is a 6 cylinder F1 Magna.
Sorry to hear the sad story behind the picture.

Ian ,Chris and Forum:
Great photo. I think this is a sad story all round. The DVLA have no record. The paper Register has nothing. My vote is for a F Type too. You could try emailing Ian Ross. Link below. http://www.fmagna.org.uk/ I am sure he would like the photo. All the best.

The Registration number MG 1606 is original to F1058 which sadly does not appear to have survived. The car was supplied by University Motors to Dr C J C Earl, Caterham, on 20th April 1932. It was a tourer with black body and green wheels/upholstery.
How sad the owner was Shot down and killed.

Many thanks for all the quick replies.
I've told my Mother who is also very grateful. She was convinced she remembers the car as being red, but she was only 3 at the time. She also corrected me and stated the car broke down on his way to the airfield not a prang. He also forgot my Mums baby shoe which he never normally flew without.
The garage owner fixed the car and generously refused to charge my Great-Grandfather when he went to pick it up.
Obviously, I never got to meet my Grandfather, Henry William Ellis DFM but without his sacrifice it's almost certain I wouldn't be here today.
Do the DVLA ever allow old registrations to be purchased directly? Putting on my car would be a great tribute.

Count Reg No Make Model Chassis No Build Date Reg Date Days Variant Source Remarks 278 MG1606 M.G. F1 F1058 24-Mar-32 20-Apr-32 27 4 Seater 1 It also appears in the list of University Motors registrations, so those identifying it as an F1 are spot on.

Ian, what a great photo, but what a heartbreaking story. Nevertheless thank you for sharing it.
Do you know which airfield that photo might have been taken at?

MG 1606 is not on the DVLA website, so it must be available somewhere, at a price!!

It may be from the 'Julian Evers' Listing that was produced and sold at Silverstone a number of years ago! I have a copy!

Ian, Chris and Forum:
I have searched Register using "search" function. Nothing. I then tried Google with the following result.-see link. https://www.mg-cars.org.uk/news/news211.html Useful background but not much else.
Does this list exist? Ans where, please. All the best. John Bakewell

Dear Forum:
I have been researching the history of the Mosquito in WW2 and there crews. Sad and sobering by turns. This is an example of the men and the plane. See links. http://aircrewremembered.com/ronald-densham.html There is much, much more if required.
