Looking for information on MG License plate GL101

this car was purchased by my Grandfather new and he drove for many years before crashing it on the Downend to Chipping Sodbury Road

he had the car repaired and used it as a Sunday driver for a few more years before selling

would love to know any history on the car past his ownership

Cheers Justin

Hi Justin

Unfortunately the Registration number GL 101 is not recorded in the Register. Pity.

From the photo I guess the car is a swept wing J2.

Albert George Nott though he went by George,

he was the original owner new from the factory and would likely have registered the car in the Bristol area,

he had many many cars over the years and as a small boy i remember him having cars parked in a line along the side of his house,

he helped me fix up my first motorcycle when i was 14, and since then the automotive addiction has just grown,

thanks justin

GL is a Bath registration number.

The car would almost certainly have been supplied to a local garage in Bath via Welch & Company in Bristol.

GL 101 would seem to have originally been issued in late 1932. J2101 was registered GL 123 on 6 Oct 1932 and J3442 (the fifth swept wing J2) was registered GL 855 on 14 August 1933. So there is a clear mismatch between the reg number which seems to date from September/October 1932 and the fact that it’s a swept wing car so first registered in mid 1933 at the earliest.

Noticed too late to edit: the earliest date for a swept wing car to be registered would be mid August 1933, not mid 1933.

I tried the Bath Record Office to see if they hold any registration details for GL 101. They told me that they don't have any records from the 1930s.

I then tried a search of the Bristol Records Office by inputting "Welch & Company". I did so because I knew that they had records of Bryan Brothers (Ford dealers) sales from way back. Unfortunately, all that came up for Welch & Company was "Redcliff St nos. 91-92 Welch & Company additions, alterations & warehouse October 1912 - January 1913."

Sorry!
