..... and a J2 engine and gearbox ......?
A pretty car but a very odd proposition in its current form with Morris 8 / MM engine and box. |

It seems to have been registered as 826UXH at some point, and has the chassis plate shown below on the bulkhead.

The guarantee plate doesn’t look very convincing. The engine number is in the same font as the car number and far too uniform. The engine number would have been hand stamped and not in the same font as the car number. Plus, the addition of the letter J to both car number and engine number seems dodgy, to say the least. Even if the factory did all the things claimed, they wouldn’t surely have changed the car's chassis number in this way.
It would certainly be interesting to see the documentation supporting the claimed changes.

Yes. The fonts are all wrong, as is the layout and the two monstrous dots under the Ltd. It would seem to be a butchered version of this particularly nasty repro

There is a picture of D0301 in the MG D Group list of 'Survivors'. The very rare and strangely recent looking pre war colour photograph must have been taken prior to 1939 when the car still had a D-type body. Well worth a look.

This one? I too would place the photo as much more modern, but apart from the front wings am not confident about which body is fitted. |

D0301 would be one of the original short chassis cars with a 7’ 0” wheelbase compared to 7’ 2” of the later Ds and Js. I wonder how the J2 body accommodates this? Perhaps a shorter bonnet?

Would that not give an issue with the length of the steering column? I've never understood where the extra 2" went in the later D types compared to the earlier ones. |

Under 'Conditions' the ad says -
"Very nice two-seater body, presumably modified by the factory in 1939 from a four-seater"

Looks very much like an Exchange and Mart Bitza to me. Odd headlamps, sidelamps, horn, spotlight, dashboard, front wings, brake drums, petrol tank, door locks,hood/tonneau fixings, windscreen mounts, electrics, near side bonnet side and bonnet clips. It might look pretty but to make it a proper D Type or decent J2 copy would cost a fortune especially with the need to aquire a MMM engine and gearbox. At the price it is I think the vendor should grab the money and run ! However, I regularly look at Car and Classics on line web site and am amazed at the prices some private sellers and traders in Europe seek for our type of cars this being no exception.

But apart from this, Mike, what do you think of it?
Exchange and Mart Bitza! I love it
