Ian, I can help with a choice of "quite a few" M Type rods as described if they will do. Let me know and I'll look them out and send some photos for you.

I believe Ford 109E conrods could be used in the F engine...

PeterL . Not correct. There a short stroke rod with a much larger big end Dia and a much larger small end . the only ford rod that has 1.5" B End with a 96 MM stroke is the E93a and i have fitted many to mmm engines very successfully .A grate connecting rod and will run to over 6000 RPM Very well.

Have you used white metal or shell bearings when doing so?

Keith, thanks but I wanted to avoid clamped little ends, but the Ford ones sound interesting too.

David, re the Ford rods, are particular pistons required, and I think I read the rods are also available with shell? A better rod than the J obviously. Where would I find the bits?

Thanks both.

I believe the J rods are actually stronger than the Ford rods. I went through this comparrison exercise when taking out my Durallium rods in the F type engine. I also seem to recall the Ford rod needs an eccentric little end bush to maintain the correct piston height.

Richard No, Just different pistons. We have been doing that from before you were a twinkle. On 6cyl Hornet useless alloy Rods .Henry rods were converted to thin wall shells which were very little then in the 50s. As were SE bushes Regards DC

What pistons do they need? Also, do you have to amend the big end journals on the crank to fit the rods with shells?
Thanks

I have used ford E93a rods with white metal big ends and P type pistons but as Rich says they need an eccentric bush for the little ends.

Thank you Terry for your confirmation to the correctness of my comment.

The Ford rods can be made to work, but if you do not adjust the operating length and you use standard pistons then the crown height is different.

My recommendation is, stick with J rods, they are the correct specification, stronger and plentiful

I have recently built my F type engine with new E93A Ford rods, shell bearings, floating gudgeon pins.Std 57mm pistons, and to make up the 1mm lower piston height used a 5 thou solid copper head gasket. Nick.
