This article about nuts and bolts might be of interest to a wider audience... is in today's Guardian..

And I have a pianola and now no hope of restoring it. Anyone interested get in touch and I can tell you more.

And on the MG front, out in the tourer yesterday, such a buzz!

Pianola free to good home, by the way. Sadly I no longer have space or time...

Cheers

Peter,

If you’re referring to this article about Crystal Palace - https://www.theguardian.com/artanddesign/2024/sep/16/solved-the-mystery-of-how-victorians-built-crystal-palace-in-just-190-days - I find it hard to believe that it took 173 years to work this out. The use of standardised threads for nuts and bolts was well established in the mid to late 1800s and had anyone given the matter any thought they’d surely have concluded that they must have been used in Crystal Palace, if only by the fact that it was dismantled and rebuilt. I strongly suspect an AI written article!

Senility! I even proof-read it and didn't notice I hadn't added the link! So thank you!

I can fully believe it took that long for standardisation to be adopted... I mean, look at how many nut sizes and standards there are. Surely enough for a large book. A mere article only scratches the surface.

And what a kristallnacht it would have made if it had still been there during the war.

I am always hooked by anything about the crystal Palace.

ow, what about this pianola?

Cheers

Peter,
The article claims that they’ve only just discovered, after 173 years, that standardised nuts and bolts were used. That’s what I find hard to believe - that they’ve only just discovered this. That sounds implausible to me.

The good thing about standards is that there are so many of them. <grin>

Whilst on the controversial thread subject; is there a standard for Birmingham screwdrivers?

Hello, Peter.
I have an original postcard which illustrates Crystal Palace. The sender has written an eye witness account of the fire overleaf. It is strange that by all accounts that very little was done to combat the fire early on despite there being a fire service station on site.

One suspects some complacency at work. Who would have thought a building primarily composed of iron and glass could catch fire, much less be consumed so swiftly and completely?
