This is listed on the back of the picture as a 746cc supercharged MG special, driven by I. Richards at Shelsley Walsh, August 1958. Can anyone add any more detail?

Does that look like a small jerrycan on the left-top of the radiator? What could that have been that it deserves such an unusual place? Also, there is some black extension on the right side of the bonnet, by the front wheel. And something behind the driver, on top of the tail.
Anybody knows what those are?
