While browsing the newspaper archives for info on the 33 TT I came across this photograph captioned 'Lieut. J. G. C. Low with his MG Midget, one of the smallest cars in the race". He's certainly listed as down to drive a 746cc Midget but the car in the photo doesn't look to be it.
An F Magna perhaps?

The Registration number does not appear in the printed 2013 Register.
I agree with Ollie in that the radiator is from an F or perhaps an L. It looks very much like a salonette.

I have the voluminous cap, I have the long trench-coat. At 5'10" and a modest 42" chest, the difficulty is getting into the P-Type while wearing them. Slim trainers are also obligatory, rather than the welted leather-soled shoes then considered de rigeur.
People were smaller then.
Bob.

Indeed, Bob. My dad was only about 5' 8" and would not have been considered small in the 1930s. I'd say he found to easier to get in to the J2 than I do. Of course being some forty years older than he was when he had it might have something to do with it! Haven't yet tried the welted shoes but they would look the part, and as for the cap - awesome! |

F1242 was sold to University Motors as a rolling chassis so did it have a special coach built body fitted to it?

According to Mike Allison's files, F1242 was a Carlton Coupé.
Low definitely planned on driving his C-type in the race until the crash in practice which Simon mentioned in his other thread, cancelled those plans.

The accident did not involve Low as the car was being driven by his reserve driver, Lieut. G. H. S. Balmain, who ended up in hospital and was not fit to race. According to the newspaper report, the car was to be repaired and Low was scheduled to race it on the Saturday. It was apparently the only unsupercharged Midget entered in the race. I don't have the results to hand to say if he did in fact take part. |
