Some tankards like this example are currently on eBay (try searching "MG Tankard" )
This one reads "MG Car Club, Chilterns Trial, 1935, H Williams" . What were the 'Chilterns Trials' and who was H. Williams and what was he driving? Is there a picture of him with his car?

The 1935 Chiltern Trial was the third in the series, starting in 1931, then 1933 and 1935. Every year to 1939 after that. All were run by the MG Car Club. In 1935 there were 8 First class and 10 Second class awards. Many of us enjoyed a tour of the Chilterns visiting many of the old hills back in 2005. Perhaps somebody has the entry and results lists for this and the other years. Are they able to be put on the website for us all to enjoy?

Sam, Mike,
Results are on this very website
Go to Documents online, MG Magazine and March 1935 issue. Seemingly he was driving a J2, entrant 125.
Now if only the 1934 Brighton to Beer results would magically appear.

Full details of the 1934 Brighton- Beer Trial including the hills (but not the specific route) and results all appear in the great Donald Cowbourne's book "Trials Drivers and Their Cars - 1928 to 1939". Also appeared in a yearbook article in recent years. Can't look it up at present, as my copies of the Yearbooks have been loaned to another Member. Are you seeking details of a specific car or driver ?

Hello Colin,
Thank you, yes I was. I recently came across a photo of my M Type (UT7942) competing in the 1934 event (from the Brunells photograph thread in the General Forum!)and I am hoping this will give me a lead on that early part of UT7942 history. I am aware of the first owner, but have a total gap up to more or less the 1970s. It may also help me to find any details as to whether or not it competed in anything else around that period.

Thanks to all for the information.
So H.Williams was driving a J2 when he won his tankard. I gave way to temptation and bought the tankard which has already arrived and polished up very well (should I have used an oily rag?) . I have still to rinse it out with beer.
I note the Premier Award was 'The C.M.I. Banana" won by G.A. Hutcheson in an L Type Magna.
I would be very interested to know more about H.Williams and what became of him and his J2.
