Insert Image:

This is the first MG to be displayed at a New York Motor Show held from Jan 2nd to 9th, 1935. It is not long after Sam Collier became the MG distributor for America in August 1934. His first order was for six used J2s and this is likely one of them. We know there were two grey cars and one blue which would show the light colour of this picture. But we don't know the chassis numbers of all of them, so can anyone help identify this J2.

Mike Hawke in "75 years" says that MG 2212 was worn by J2620 when used by George Tuck but that the registration was changed to GH 4193 when it was sold in February 1934. I wonder why it was changed? Or was it still on J2620 as a languishing used car when Sam Collier came shopping?

Does anyone know what colour J2620 was when new? (from the chassis file or UM records?)

Other clues to this car's identity may be:
Small cut-out on left of front apron. For a fog light?
Electric wiper motor
Altette horn
Stepped in headlights

I think all these would have been done in England before a sale to Sam Collier.

BTW we know all about the Bugatti T57 sharing the stand.

Many thanks

Here's MG 2212 when tested by Light Car magazine in June 1932. It definitely seems to be a darker colour.

That's very interesting. I have a feeling that MG 2212 might have been a roving number plate. And they do refer to it as a "hack" car. If one looks closely at the plate in the NY picture, it seems to have a surplus of holes by late 1934.

The car pictured in the "Light Car" existed in June 1932, so it must be an earlier chassis number than J2620. The date for our J2594, 26 cars earlier, is November 8th 1932. I don't have the build sheets for the whole J2 production, just the page including ours.

Thanks

On closer examination of the copy of the Light Car article it is actually June 1933 not 1932, which makes much more sense as the first J2 wasn't built until July 1932! You can find the build dates here - http://www.triple-mregister.org/OctagonHeaven/Articles/162.pdf

Thanks Simon and Graham,
Another J2 in the "Collier six" I haven't spent much time on yet was green and was described as being for Sam Collier to use as a "demonstrator". Maybe if the MG 2212 plate left England on the green J2620, I wonder if it was then put on the grey car in the picture just for the show. Eliminating theories is as important as proving them!
(We are off to the "Kimber Festival" this weekend. It's an MG research symposium put on by Dick Knudson)

When trying to ascribe particular colours to particular B&W tones in this era, one must always remember that some film, but not all, was so called "Ortho" film on which some colours were rendered dark vs light on "ordinary" film and vice versa.
