I know this is going to be unlikely.
My gearbox turret has the usual broken lugs. After having someone try to aluminium weld it, then on a recommendation, sent it to someone to have it laser welded, both attempts have failed.
Any intact P-Type gearbox turrets out there?
Or anyone know someone who can actually weld it up?!
Thanks Paul.

have you got a photo of it , ali welding is not normally a problem , i have welded gearbox castings without problems and the turrets are the same alloy , |

This is the photo that the company laser welding it, sent to me today. They said that as soon as they started to weld, the chunk in the front centre of the picture 'fell' off. They say the casting is of poor quality.
One lug is broken off, the other is cracked. There were pits that I also wanted them to fill so I could re-shape.
Another welder has also tried to TIG weld it without success.

i don't see any evidence of tig welding on the turret, don't see any reason it can't be welded , i would build up the lugs and then rework them , the casting does look to have porosity which does make filling the top face harder . it looks like it has been painted silver , is it filled at all ? |

The TIG welding was attempted on the broken lug.
The casting has been very fine soda blasted that has given it the painted look. It is not painted.
I had asked both welders to just build up so I could shape it back.
I too cant see why it should not weld - but both have said it wont!

i would first file the broken lug flat to the depth of the hole to make a clean joint surface,( welding dirty alloy is a waist of time ) pre heat it and then build it up . |

HI Paul, BIRMAL aluminium castings parts are easy TIG weldable, prepare the broken places with a stainless steel brush and look for a TIG welder who knows what he is doing. Carl J2 4362 L2 2036

All sound advice - thanks, however I don't have aluminium welding equipment so am at the mercy of companies who all say 'yes, I know what I am doing'! I have to assume that as they say they know what they are doing, that they would have prepared the surface appropriately.
