EDIT I have got in touch with John about the letter
Hello First of all, sorry for the bad english but this is a long story and I will try to keep it simple.
I would like to get in contact with a man named John Joynes about a letter he sent to a friend of my father in 1995. John sent the letter to "Stefan" who imported the car that my father had bought. Stefan gave the letter to my father but 2 weeks later Stefan died from cancer. After that it kind of run into the sand.

The car has a very unique racing history and it would be interesting to know what information John has.

![](http://www.triple-mregister.org/forums/uploads/Jacken/201672421_IMG_4969.JPG) The car is still in my fathers garage.
So if anyone here know how i could get in contact with John Joynes, please let me know. If there is any questions, please ask. /Jacob |

Has the four speed gearbox a number on top in the position indicated?

I can probably take a look in the weekend. Do you mind if I ask why the number is important? And where should i look? Under the car? Drivers seat? Under the hood? |

John lives in South Petherton in Somerset and looked fit when I last saw him.
I expect he will pop up on this forum before too long...
If he doesn't I will pop in and chase him...
Remind me as I am rather absent minded.
Cheers

Factory fitted four speed gearboxes were very rare on M-types and the special code number gives a unique insight into the history of the gearbox and the car.

The special number is on top of the casing just ahead of the turret where the gear change attaches to the gear box. It could be under carpet.

Interestingly, those certainly look like the leather mudguard protectors offered to D0430 in 1932.

The engine number 2-M3101A is very unique, starting with '2-M' rather like a chassis number.

Hello Jacob
John Joynes was at one time Registrar and it would have been in this capacity that he wrote his letter.
The M type files are now with Mike Dalby who is the sub-Registrar for the M types.

The Registration Number PJ 3200 was first issued to 2M 3101. How it came to be on 2M 3342 I do not know.

Chassis number or engine number? Has there been a mix up?

Chassis Number 2M3342 did originally have engine number MG3101A but was not registered PJ 3200. PJ 3200 was originally issued to 2M3101.
Jacob, when you check the engine number please can you also check the chassis number.

Sam
A factory replaced engine would have the prefix 2/ so perhaps we have a mis-noted 2/ MG3101A?
Regards, Graham
