Am I correct in assuming that the PA came from the works, fitted with Lucas 1130 side lamps, rather than the octagonally-shaped side lamps that were fitted to other models?

I believe you are correct, I think the octagonal side lights came in with the PB and NB models?

My L2 had the octagonal lights fitted when I bought it!

In Malcolm Green's book "M.G.Road Cars - Vol. 1" on page 39 there are two photos of what Malcolm believed to be the prototype P Type. In the caption he comments "In production the side lamps were changed to octagonal style". On page 43 there is a photo of a production PA and Malcolm draws particular attention to the octagonal side-lights.

My PA 0613 still has what I believe to be original octagonal lamps. No chrome left, and only one family owner before me since 1937. Here's a photo of her in 1937:

I've always assumed that she carried these lights from new, but as I can't account for the first three years (~4000 miles), I can't be sure.

Have searched to no avail, so what were the original sidelights for the J2, round or octagonal?

Thanks.

Mark all J types were fitted with round Lucas 1130 type sidelights with metal badge. I believe all P types were fitted with the octagonal lamps but there may possibly have been a carry over of the 1130 round lamps on a few of the initial production cars.

Just to add to Terry's comment about J2 side lights, for the cycle wing cars, at least, they were painted the same colour as the wings - not chromed - although it may be that the later swept wing cars had chromed lights as part of the facelift pending the delayed arrival of the P Type.

PA0448 seems to have had octagonal side lights all its life.

Avid readers of Blower will note that the side lights illustrated in the wiring diagram for P Types (Page 503 in my copy) are octagonal.
