I have in my ' boxes of bits ' an Autopulse which looks a little like a petrol pump but may have a different job. Was this fitted to J2s ? I have so many items ' non original , like a carbide lighting system that I need to clarify whether or not this was an original fitted item. Thanks in advance.

Hello Chris, I think they were fitted in pairs in the early K3s

The J3 and possibly one of the 18/80's. The other had an Autovac.

Which makes me wonder how the double twelves got the petrol uphill to the downdraft carb? Too early for the SU pump, too high for a Petrolift. The LeMans cars has air pressure tanks in the boot, but mot the 12/12s.........

Hi John, Don't think that either the MKI or MKII 18/80 had the autopulses fitted, but I think I am correct in saying that the 18/100, Tigress cars originally had a twin autopulse unit fitted. Keith

and just to confirm the image above; the J3 were originally equipped with a single Autopulse.
So if it is not wanted, I would be pleased to give it a home, and a possible role on my J3!

There were two types of Autopulse: One with a clear glass bowl on top, fitted to J3 and others (now very rare) and the other with a metal cap on the top.

Thanks to all contributors. I am still attempting to work out what was actually fitted to the two J2s, J2353 is relatively easy as pretty standard although nothing of the ' mulliner ' bodywork has survived. Most of the original bodywork from J4129 has survived, she had so many non original parts added ( probably for racing ) that its difficult to know exactly what the car actually looked like and my theory is the car was possibly stripped down to save weight in any case. Still cannot find any contempory photos from 1933-35 when J4129 was trialed, last time was Brooklands JCC March 1935 that I can find, a month later the owner/driver Dudley Cottingham was killed along with his girlfriend and there are no race records of J4129 after that I can find. Next information is in the ownership of M. Barry 28 Mill Road, Cambridge, 5th March 1964 ( from the R.F.60 Registration Book ), then Michael Bird from 1964 as a spares donor to J2353 both ending up dismantled in Cyprus. Unfortunately Michael Bird died without leaving any notes or photos and his widow Angela knows little as both J2s were dismantled and stored before she met and married Michael. Photos of some of the parts I unpacked in Cyprus to see what I had.

Ian, If I decide to move the pump on, you have first refusal, thanks for enquiring. The photos on the previous post are just from two of the thirteen packing cases, that does not include the contents of the lock up, mostly J4129s parts and virtual scrap as so badly corroded.

Also used on early Porches although often 6V.

C-types had a pair of them on a bracket bolted to the water jacket plate on the N/S of the engine under the exhaust manifold. JO29 the 18/80 developed to 18/100 spec by the MG Car Co had two of them when extracted from the tree in Morgan Marshall's garden. I obtained 2 from Italy.. from an Alfa owner as the late 20's cars had them. They were 6volt. I used to get spares from a man in the USA...... no idea if he is still around. FOZ |

I dumped the ones that came with my old J3 because I was warned by several people that they were dangerous and not to use them. At the time - late 70's -I was also told by ex factory employee that MG hated them because they had caused at least two fires and that they changed the C's and J3's over to the SU pump as soon as possible. Never really investigated further and went along with the advice at the time.
