I saw the PA today that I mentioned. It's ok and as I expected. When you start the engine from cold and leave it ticking over, it takes a good 30 seconds for the oil pressure gauge to move. It then goes quite quickly up to about 80 psi, then drops to about 30 once a bit warm. The automatic chassis oil lubricating lines haven't been used and some pipes are not connected. There are some recent receipts, about £900 was spent on the diff in 2012, a new crown wheel & pinion special bolts etc, etc. Door hinges are a bit loose, due to hinge screws loose in wood. Dash and all parts on it are in super condition. A test drive proved there were no nasty noises.

Whenever I start up an engine that has not run for a while, I spin it over on the starter until some oil pressure registers before turning the ignition on.

I know this is heavy on the battery and gives the starter motor a bit of a beating, but both these downsides are better than oil starved bearings and at least I know I will have some oil pressure straight away when it does start.

What do people think?

I think a warm engine should register at least 40 on idle and a cold engine 100 on starting.

My assessment therefore is that this one is a bit tired and will need looking at fairly soon... new pump gears might be all but it could be more... depending on what has been done to it in the past.

As the oil pressure relief valve is supposed to be set between 60 and 80 psi, I would have thought 100 psi is on the high side for starting unless a straight oil of high viscosity is in play.

30 psi seems a bit low for a warm engine, mine drop to about 40 psi on tickover, but only when very hot.

If a thin modern multi-grade has been used, this could explain the 80/30 without there being an underlying problem.

I decided not to buy it, as the underside was very corroded and most mechanical parts were not maintained and sloppy. I felt it needed a full restoration, not just with an oily rag. The condition is a lot worse that the seller says. Now looking for a nice P series or J type, if anyone knows of an honest car for sale ?

Did you get a cassis number, as the registration number does not come up on the Register.
