FWIW, here are two photos of my guarantee plate. Beneath the first one you can see the bolt for the footrest

The firewall is original, complete with original oil & dirt, and the plates have never to my knowledge been removed.
It has just occurred to me that many of the large holes have clearly been drilled when the plate was off the firewall, or in other words, the "...removal of this plate". I refer you to the final line at the foot of the plate. This might add strength to the hypothesis that the hole indicates cessation of the guarantee.

Firstly welcome to the Forum, as you can see it is the source of much info!
With regards to the dates, you mention the brass plates were introduced on the L types in August 1933 starting with L2074. I think this is not correct. My car is L2023 which was delivered on 26th May 1933 and has it's original brass plate as shown in my earlier posting. My files show L2074 was delivered on 11th October 1933.
Sadly there is no record of L2074 having survived.

In answer to Tom, the body number plate on J4199 is the rather arty Carbodies plate fixed to the offside of the panel behind the seat as well as on that separate plate above the chassis/engine details on the firewall. The Carbodies plate also gives date of manufacture. The actual body number is stamped into the wooden cross member below the scuttle and quite hard to see. Simon C. |

Hi All,
This is a repeat an earlier question:
Is it possible to have a forum or database solely for the purpose of serial number plates in chronological order? This is a very interesting thread which shows much interest.
Patterns, holes, trends, changes, engine numbers, missing cars or missing plates???
Thanks..... tommm |

So what you're saying, Simon, is this J2 had both body number plates - aluminum at rear tub and brass on firewall? Do you have pic of the aluminum Carbodies plate?
Thanks... tommm |

I wonder what an outsider would make of 20 people discussing a hole in a brass plate ? I'm only jealous because mine hasn't got one and I've got a foot rest! Graham PB0602 |

I have to admit, I never saw this thread making four pages.....I almost feel left out, our plates don’t even have the extra holes!

You can buy reproduction guarantee plates from S&V. For a small extra cost they will supply them pre-stamped.
I wonder if, as a result of this thread, they will supply them pre-drilled too???
Just a thought! |

Might make it to 5 pages even? Another picture to add to Peter's showing the Carbodies plate in position. It's original but I had to put it on an aluminium backing as the corner holes were corroded. Simon C. |

Excuse my ignorance here but are these Carbodies plates made of thin aluminium or are they a thick casting as on the 18/80?
Steve's photo on page 3 appears very thin and Simon's looks much heavier.
This is from a 1930 mk1 18/80
