There can’t be many photos of our cars which have not appeared at sometime on our forum, but just in case this one has been missed out, here goes!

Would that have been Norman Bracey? We know he had a J2 (J3295) in 1934, a racing special car that had a blown PA engine and has a Brooklands history - but this pic looks like a PA.
Any clues anyone?

Looks more like a PA than a PB (rhombic centre dash panel and no central speedo ....)

Not a PB with the trapezoidal instrument panel.

Perhaps regular Plus Fours rather than baggy Plus Twos (and not to mention a rather precarious jacking method)?

Does anyone else think that plate look like BPU 886? That would make it an Essex registration from around June 35 |

With thanks to Oliver Richardson and his sharp eyesight, it seems very likely that this is PA1648 (BPL 999) and guess what? The first registered owner was N.E. Bracey of Weybridge!
QED? (sorry that's Latin, not English!)
Alas the car does not appear to have survived...

It is not easy to establish at what stage of the repair, the photo was taken. It could have just started as the rear hubs are still fully assembled, or just completed and the dif. they are looking at is the faulty one.
They both appear to have oily hands.

Yes, oily hands, but clean trouser and knickerbockers. Doing that kind of job, I usually end up with a circular black grease-mark from the hub end ! Gerhard |

Yes Chris. Both gentlemen seemed blissfully unaware of the double decker bus approaching them over the brow of the hill. In fact Norton Bracey did rather well in his PA BPL 999 in both trials and "real racing". In July 1935 he was part of a team in the LCC Relay Race, at Brooklands comprising himself and Lord Avebury in supercharged 847cc M.G.s and H B Shaw with a blown 1321cc car. According to Bill Boddy the team finished the event at an average speed of 81.88 mph which is pretty impressive on its own, but even more so when other reports state that Lord Avebury retired mid way through the race with a run big-end. In 1936 at the BARC Autumn Race Meeting Norton Bracey (now driving a blown PB (or possibly BPL 999 with a nice new PB engine) won the First October Long Handicap. Boddy tells us that Dodson was favourite with the "works" Austin but Norton Bracey pulled out unexpected speed from the P Type on the "limit" mark lapping at 93.44 mph to win at an average speed of 90.01 mph. Second was Parnell's K3.
How sad to think that this little rocket might have been turned into razor blades.
