Winding the spring on a toy car by pulling it back on the table top (or other surface). (I was at a toy store yesterday.)
(or fraudulently resetting the odometer)

Using the starting handle with the car in reverse (ignition off) to wind the car backwards?

Chris, is it winding the odometer back by driving in reverse, I think some of the older design odo's did this..
Happy Christmas,
Paul. |

Thanks to everyone who replied.
The answer was spotted very early on but I wanted to see what others thought !
So it’s well done to.......... Colin Murrell who got it absolutely right. I wonder how many were aware of this old method of getting your car out of a ditch or when stuck in mud etc ? When winding back on an incline you had to keep tight hold of the starting handle otherwise the weight of the car would carry it forwards and likely to run you over ! You needed someone on the handbrake or, if on your own, something to keep chocking the road wheel as you travelled backwards.Happy days when cars were fitted with starting handles.
Best wishes,
Chris

Lucky guess! We used to move the old Fordson tractor about in the garage using the starting handle ![](images/icon_smile.gif)

Ice Cold in Alex has just been on again. That lager on the bar at the end still makes you thirsty even on a freezing day.
