Dear Forum:

Planning a driving tour soon-ish.
Will be going more then a thousand miles.
The issue of oil change and service presents a real barrier to length of the trip.
"What cunning plans" do you use in this situation.
All the best.

Hugh and Forum:

The car in question is used in the summer for local trips on a daily/weekly basis.
Longer runs and overnight trips.
The issue is more on longer trips of oil and filter disposal.
I carry spares and have rarely needed roadside repairs.
All the best.

With new oil and filter you should manage at least 3,000 miles.

Ian and Forum:

While I appreciate the modern oil and filter argument.
Carburetors and valves are another issue.
I prefer not to push the envelope to far to often.
Repenting at leisure is not my favorite pastime .
All the best.

Doing a full service before you go, then just topping up fluids, the odd pump with a grease gun and oil can for the next 1,000 miles can hardly be described as "pushing the envelope."

Many years ago I went down to Nice and back in a P using this approach; no regrets. Much more fun to drive them rather than fiddle with them too often. Fiddling can result in unnecessary problems which can then be repented on at your leisure.

As with others, I really don't think you should have a problem with a 1000 miles on a sorted car. In the last few years, I have done 2000 mile rtip round Scotland in my Riley 9, Interlaken and back in one of my Austin 7s and toured Devon and Dorset for 2 weeks in the M Type (now with another owner) setting off from home in East Anglia. How far do you plan to travel each day?

Dear John,

1000 miles is fine .... the most useful thing is access to the internet and the forum. Our last long tour caused 5 broken spokes ... new wheels from the U.K. arrived in a matter of days. I would take a few bits for roadside repairs most recently I had to replace the ignition coil ! Don’t worry about an oil change

Robin.

Probably a good idea to carry some oil particularly if you are using a hard find brand.
