Further to my previous thread regarding K2 chassis no K2019 reg no MG 2955 we have now established thanks to Cathelijne that the car competed in the Filton Sprint meeting which was held in October 1945 and organised by the Bristol Aeroplane Motor Club on the outfield at the factory aerodrome. Would anybody happen to have any information regarding this event or even a programme / entry list? Any information greatly appreciated. Thanks, Ian.

I wonder if there's any details in the book "Backfire - the history of the Bristol Aeroplance Company Motior Cub"?

I wonder if the Bristol Aeronautical museum, Filton, might be able to help.

They have an exhibition of Bristol cars plus no doubt plenty of historical info.

Here's a link to the results (top 3 in class) https://forums.autosport.com/topic/32352-filton-sprint-1945-and-whitchurch-races-1959/

"Racing Cars 1500cc

1 F.R.Gerard 26.3

2 W.O.Watkins 32.7

3 D.Boore 34.3"

With this little snippet "For "Boore" read "Poore", as in Dennis Poore! - 746cc MG R-type. Poore was also 3rd in this class, with a time of 34.2 sec." Motorsport magazine Dec'45

The Filton Sprint held on the 27th October 1945 was organised by the Bristol Aeroplane Motor Sports Club (a club open only to employees of the Bristol Aeroplane Company) and was only the second competitive speed event authorised by the RAC after the end of WW2 and the first event held on a sealed surface. No spectators were admitted. The event was a half mile sprint over the taxi-ways at the north eastern end of the airfield. and included a fast right hand bend between the control tower and some hangars. The sprint was not run in subsequent years. I have details of the first three competitors in each class but there is no sign of K2015. The Class for Sports cars under 1100cc was won by A W Morrish with an 847cc car with a time of 36.2 secs and Denis Poore in RA0258 was third in the class for Racing cars up to 1100cc with a time of 36.2 secs and third in the class for racing cars up to 1500cc with a time one tenth of a second slower.
This information was kindly supplied to me several years ago by Pete Stowe who is a great expert on all types of motor sport in the Bristol area, both pre and post war.

I was forwarded a conversation between 'our' Colin and Pete Stowe of the Bristol Pegasus Motor Club in which Pete says the pics were MOST DEFINITELY NOT taken at Filton ...

Regardless, what proof do we have the car R.D. (Dennis) Poore used at Filton, as per the report and results, was RA0258 when he simultaneously owned J4002?

Hi Cat,
Motor Sport Dec 1945, p. 249, mentions Poore driving his R-type.
Cheers, Karl

I have sinced joined the Pegasus Motor Club Cat, so will meet Pete at some stage. I'm hoping that there is a 75th Anniversary type event of the Filton Sprint next year. I'll keep you posted if I find out any more

I've seen the photo above - or a similar one - before. It's probably tha 1937 VSCC sprint at Littleborough, referenced in Peter Hull's history of the club. There was a whole batch of pictures which appeared on eBay about seven years ago.

Photos of the Filton sprint are rarer than hens' teeth, not least because (1) there were very few spectators (2) film was still hard to obtain and (3) the weather was awful; fog/mist/rain/drizzle. The start and finish line officials apparently communicated by Aldis lamp!

Richard,

It has been established that the event is in fact the Southsea Speed Trials which took place in October 1937. Still trying to establish information on the K2. I have contacted the Southsea motor club who organised the event and are still very much active but await a response.

Thanks,
Ian
