Yes John Dowley was my Grandfather and my Father was his Son. The business was established in 1923. Before WW2 they mainly dealt in cars -including of course M.G's. I still have my Father's Glass's Guide from 1939. Around 1962 I had my first Workshop at The Lilacs. I found a brand new early M / Morris Minor Crankshaft under the workbench!

What a long and interesting heritage which makes Jamie the fourth generation!

Happy days when in the 1960s spares and parts were plentiful.

I well remember when Mike started his MMM Spares business from a wooden shed on the left hand side as you entered John Dowley’s yard off the Whitchurch Road in Shrewsbury.

Full marks to Mike and Jamie for all they have done for us over the years !

Cheers,

Chris

I think that a large part of my car has come Mike and Jamie. Many, many thanks.

I think we can safely say that spares and parts are still plentiful thanks to Mike and Jamie and also all the other traders. Can there be any other 1920s/30s cars so well provided for at reasonable prices apart, perhaps, from the Austin Seven?

George; Simon:

In 1960s California the spares situation was another story entirely. Even MMM information was limited to the Blower manual and "Maintaining the Breed." T Types were well supported, but there was precious little interest and no spares support for the few prewar MGs in the West.

When I referred to parts being plentiful I meant “spare” parts such as gearboxes, major components, axles, blocks etc etc. Scrapyards were always good places to look!

Today we are very lucky to have suppliers, such as S & V, of new parts. In the distant past I had to scavenge for good used parts.
