Hello Chris, I have no personal information about Mr Potter-Moore and I don't know whether he was "in the trade". I do have quite a lot about the car's appearances at Brighton Speed Trials however.
Leonard entered the car at the 7/9/46 event. His Comp No. was 87 and the car was entered as a 1287cc Magnette running in Class 5 for unsupercharged sports cars up to 2000cc. No time info available.
He seems to have given the 1947 event a miss but he was back again 4/9/48 under Comp No 41. with a 1408cc Magnette running in Class 12 for Racing Cars up to 1500cc. He clocked a good time of 31.01 seconds (72.5 mph) but it looks as if he was unplaced.
M Potter-Moore appears on the 4/9/51 event. Comp No. 104. Car 1086cc Magnette which has been identified as K3008 driving in the 2000cc Supercharged Sports Car Class. Time not known.
6/9/52. M Potter-Moore again. Comp No 100. Car MG 1435cc supercharged. Class 5 Supercharged sports cars up to 2000cc. Time 34.04 secs 2nd in Class which was won by Derek Davis in the Monte Carlo NA (now owned by the Allison family) who did 33.86 secs.
5/9/53. Potter-Moore again with M.G. 1435cc (s). Comp No 135. Entered in Class 6 for Supercharged Sports cars up to 2000cc. Time 32.95 secs which won him the Class. Davis's Monte Carlo car was 1,.11 seconds slower.
4/9/54. Potter-Moore. Comp No. 130. Car M.G. 1435cc (s) Class 5 Supercharged Sports Cars up to 2000cc. Time 34.40 seconds. 2nd in Class. Davis was 3rd in Class .44 seconds behind.
3/9/55. Potter-Moore. Comp No.103. M.G. 1435cc(s). Class 7 Supercharged Sports cars up to 2000cc Time 35.19 secs. 3rd in Class. Don Bishop (blown 847cc PA) was 2nd in Class with a time of 35.00 secs.
1/9/56. Potter-Moore. Comp No. 95. M.G. 1087cc (s). Class 7 Supercharged Sports Cars up to 2000cc. 1st in Class with a time of 32.91 secs. I am advised that this was NOT K3008. Don Bishop was 2nd in Class with his blown PA with a time of 35.00 secs.
No further entries after 1956,. .
I hope this is of interest to you.
Best wishes,
Colin.

Hello, Colin.
Thank’s very much for your reply, much appreciated.
I have no information on AYT197 after September, 1955 until May, 1967 which is the first entry in a replacement log book in the name of John Raymond Guyford of Woking.
I also don’t have the full competition history when owned by Cliff Davis who acquired the car from his friend Lionel Leonard. Davis apparently had even more success than Leonard.
I have a photograph of my car taken in 1935 competing in the Abingdon Trial with it’s first owner, the car in it’s original form as a four seat tourer. I think the picture is in the Abingdon Factory grounds and shows Cecil Kimber close by. Are there any records anywhere of the prewar Abingdon Trials ?
Always frustrating when you can’t fill in the gaps particularly as I wanted to do an article about the car’s history for one of the MMM publications.
Best wishes,
Chris |

Chris,
There is a 'Talking of Sports Cars' article in the Brooklands book 'MG Cars 1948-1951', have you seen it? It is easily found on eBay...or I could send you a scan. I think it also appears in one of the Stirling Moss books, but I don't think he is too complementary - I'll see if I can find it.
Regards, Graham

Just found the Stirling Moss book - different car, same name, so not, it would appear, AYT 197.

Chris , I have a partial reprint of an article in Jan 1949 The Autocar. It goes under the title of Marshall aid for a Magnette. You probably have seen it but if not I can try to send you the only page I can find. There are a couple of pics and a brief description of the car and its mods. Geoff |

Apparently, Stirling Moss and Lionel Leonard were good friends but Leonard beat Moss for FTD in one event which may have have caused some comment !! ( Boscombe Speed Trials, 7th August, 1948.)
Best wishes,
Chris

Colin, I recall that Potter Moore was owner/partner in the Halfway Garage in Berks and had a contact in USA, who he acted as an agent for |

Hello, Jay.
I was interested to read your message to Colin and was wondering if you are able to add anything more about Potter - Moore as I am the current owner of his MG NA Magnette Lester bodied car AYT 197, the subject of this post.
Thank you,
Chris |

Chris. I believe that the research done by Stewart Penfound on Harry Lester and his cars does not confirm that AYT197 has a Lester body. I am told that Leonard made the body himself except for the nose which is certainly typical Lester, but Leonard never paid Harry Lester for it as he said that it caused the car to overheat !

Mr Potter-Moore's first name was Maurice. The hyphen appears to be an affectation, since his parents were plain Mr & Mrs Moore (his mother's maiden name was Potter and his elder brother was called Norman Herbert Potter Moore). He was born on July 17th 1906 and baptised at St John's, World's End, Chelsea on August 8th the same year; the family lived at 44 Finborough Rd and his father was a commercial traveller. On the 1911 census they were at 76 Alloa Rd, Deptford Park.
He had married in 1938 and at the time the 1939 Register was compiled his wife was resident at the Duchess of Connaught Nursing Home (a maternity home) in Bagshot, where she appears to have been delivered of a daughter. The 1938 and 1939 electoral rolls show Mr & Mrs Potter-Moore living at Silver Birches, Pinewood Grove, New Haw - just a stone's throw from Brooklands. On the 1939 Register his birthdate has moved by two years to 1908. At that time he was apparently living in Bagshot with his parents-in-law and his profession is listed as 'aircraft metal fitter'. So maybe working at Brooklands for Vickers? Just a few stops down the rail line.
Can't find anything else until his death on October 15th 1982. Home address at that time was Cornerstones, 38 Newton Rd, Bishopsteignton, Teignmouth. His wife died just ten days later. House is still named and can be seen on Street View - it's a Tudorbethan bungalow! |

Many thanks for your replies, Colin, Richard and Jay.
Colin. although not evidence in itself, apparently this brass plaque has been on the dashboard of AYT 197 for many years. I am not particularly concerned whether or not the body is a Lester, the car has had at least four radiator cowls and I am currently working on a cowl which will be similar to the one Leonard had in the 1940s but with wire mesh. I am also intending to remove the existing rear half of the body which is not very attractive ( will be for sale soon ) and will replace it with one from an original NE once I have completed some restoration. I will post some pictures in due course.
Best regards,
Chris

Chris, My notes show the car AYT197 to be a Leonard modified MG,not a Lester. It was advertised for sale in motor Sport in 6-48, 10-48, 10-51 and report as running in Motor Sport at the Southsea MC hill climb. I think there was only one Leonard MG.Several Lesters..Jay |

Hello, Jay.
Thanks for your comments. I’m pleased to learn of another competition venue for the car at the South Sea MC hill climb, I had no record of this at all.
Would you have a date for the event and did you say it was reported in Motor Sport ?
Thanks, again.
Chris
