Can anyone help? How can you tell the difference between a 6volt and 12volt cutout? Is the resistance different through the coil, and what are the values?
Many thanks

Are these Lucas or Rotax cut-outs ? The only suggestion I can make is to compare the coils with others of known value. If you contact me I can send pictures of what I have.

By the way Nick Feakes has pointed out that a suitable diode can completely replace the function of an ancient cut-out which can destroy your dynamo when it fails. The diode is very cheap, reliable and easy to fit and so long as your cut-out looks the part it can sit there unconnected and doing no harm and its voltage will not matter.

Whilst on this topic can anyone tell me whether it is possible to fit a diode under either the tall or shallow versions of the metal cut out cover used on the CJF1/2 unit.
I have always been able to use an original cut out without problems but the day will come when I may have to fit a diode and I prefer the idea of fitting it under the existing cover ( with the cut out removed )if that is possible. I know the diode needs a heat sink but would it perhaps be possible to solder a heat sink to the inside of the cover and use that to mount the diode ? I have never seen one so do not know how big they are !

Subject hint: The metal covers on the original CJF units were secured by wire through those two little holes in the top and around the wire clip. The wire was finished with a small round lead seal. The removal of this seal and wire is the reason so many covers have gone missing over the years. To avoid losing yours feed a short length of wire through the holes and twist it to secure.
PS I still need a spare metal cover ! Anyone got one ?

Sorry, I do not have a spare cut-out cover. I had a diode fitted to my M-type after the original cut-out burnt itself out. It is under the "original" cover and I had forgotten about this mod until this topic came up. They are very effective but certainly need a heat sink, especially in warm (often very hot!) climes such as ours!
