My PA which is now being slowly reassembled as part of a full restoration has not been insured for 43 years and I consider it is about time I did so. This problem must have arisen many times before so there must be someone out there who can give me advice on who to contact and what value to put on a car which is merely a lot of bits scattered, not very tidily, about my workshop. Suggestions please.

Hi Maurice
I have used Vintage Car Insurance Associates over many years and I find their premiums reasonable. The email address is VintageCars@campton.co.uk
You will require a written valuation from a car club, the Triple-M Register can do this. As to valuation? If the restoration is well under way you will need to take this into consideration and put a realistic figue down. P types are currently advertised at ú20000 plus and as such a valuation of ú12/14000 for your car would be about right in my view.

Arranging insurance on my fully assembled PB for the MOT, but the insurance company will only allow a valuation up to ú5000 unless I get an independent vaulation from somewhere. can this be done from photos or has the car to be driven somewhere for the valuation, can our club do this?, will there be a cost? In New Zealand Vero Insurance (Formally Royal & SunAlliance) offer a restoration and storage policy that is cheaper than an on road policy, as the risk is less. This type of policy must be available worldwide.
I value for insurance purposes on a weekly basis in NZ and always suggest that an agreed value policy is best.
A market value policy is viewed when a claim is made, by taking the average of 3 independant pre accident valuations often resulting in values that are under insured in the eyes of the insured, but the Insurance CompanyÆs usually argue that that is their payment amount.
When a policy valuation is agreed to, you should estimate the value in 12 months time not the value today as it is inevitably going to change over the term of the policy.

I have been on the same scheme for over 30 years. The name of the company has changed over the years but they are now part of the AON group now called Private Clients. You can see their adverts in most Classic car magazines. They deal with the specialist classis cars through Royal Sun Alliance. I have all my cars on the same scheme to renew at the same date at agreed values. I have 3 complete roadworthy MGs and 2 under restoration. I recently have increased the value on the N type restoration to ú20K. Approximately every 5 years I am asked to send pictures and valuations which have increased the values. Last year I had to do this and in August 08 I had my blanket renewal which had gone down by ú50 to ú358 which I think is very good value considering the agreed values and unlimited mileage and recovery from abroad etc etc.. Bearing in mind this includes the cost of bring the cars back to current condition which is on a different thread cost more that some cars which are available for sale. Finally, you can include 4 additional drivers on each vehicle plus my wife. Several of my MG and Triple-M friends are on the same AON policy so that in times of troubles we can drive each other cars. I.e. I am named on their cars and they are named on my ones.
The contact details are Sam Aslett C/O AON Private Clients Briarcliff House Kingsmead Farnborough Hampshire GU14 7TE Direct line is 01252 767134
Hope this helps.
Regards Terry
