I have a personal number I want to put on my 1953 MG td, I have the number on retention. speaking to registration office today it appears I have to have a voluntary MOT first, seems mad, it is to ensure it is safe, but I can carry on using the car on the old plates.
The same applies if you have an "old banger" that you wish to transfer a number from. I only just realized this, on a vehicle that it would have been uneconomic to have repaired, just before the MOT expired. I nearly lost the number; beware.
