What is the significance of the number heavily stamped into the rear, offside dumb-iron (if that is the right name) casting of my J1 chassis? In my case: 2658

John,

2658 is a perfectly good J2 chassis number but it shouldn't be where you've found it and anyway your car is a J1 with the chassis number J 0312 according to our records. You haven't sent me a photo of that chassis number stamp yet so it would be handy if you could e-mail a photo of that plus the 2658. I can then compare the latter with the factory punch font used in late '32 and tell you first if your front off side dumb-iron stamp is original and also whether 2658 is a factory stamping.

As soon as I get those I'll circulate the 2658 to our J experts and see whether they can shed any light - I can't!

Cheers.
