The forthcoming Richard Edmonds auction at Castle Combe is scheduled to include as Lot 1 a so-called T type gearbox. It looks more like a Triple M gearbox to me but it has an unusual gear selector gate.

Have a look at http://www.catalogue-host.co.uk/richardedmonds/2010-10-30/illustrations_1

Any ideas?

Hi Bob,

It looks like a P or J type gearbox with a ENV remote.

Looks nothing like the TC gearbox that was fitted to my TC or any other T type box I have had or seen, and I have owned several from TA to TD.

Hi Bob

Thanks for the link to the auction, with a look at Lot 260 I have finally identified the chunk of rusty metal I dug out of my garden some time ago, as being an Austin 7 half shaft! One mystery solved.

Had a look at this auction site and all of the Riley bits come from Barry Gillies when he packed up, be care full as must of the engines would be damaged or need a lot on money spending on them!

Could that be a KB gearbox?

Page 25 of MG Road Cars vol.2 shows a picture of a K2 interior.

The remote on that looks,to me, similar to the one on the auction site.

The box itself, because of the shallow bell housing, looks like it's off a J type.

The inspection plate resembles an ENV F type one.

Regards Eric.

Eric I think you are spot on. I had a j2 gearbox with the same extension fitted some years ago and understood it was quite a popular mod in the thirties.

Wow! That's a lot of money for a J2 box with a fancy remote. The box seemed in good nick though, it turned over smoothly with all the gears engaging nicely. Just as well we didn't go up on the day.... Is it listed anywhere what the J2 & J2 special went for?

Jeremy I suspect most of the value was in what you call a fancy remote !

Thanks for that Peter.
Terry, I was surprised at the price as I wonder just how many owners would be looking for that type of remote these days - most of the cars have been restored to K3 spec & fitted with a pre-selector box!
