Hi Group,

Just wondered if there is a listing someplace that shows a year and MMM reg number correlation over the past 50 years?

Thanks!

Hi Tom

Not sure exactly what you're looking for here, I think you want a list of register numbers against when they were issued. Sadly that doesn't exist but if you can give me some more detail to go on, I'll see what I can find for you.

Regards

Robin

Hi Robin,

You're correct, like register numbers issued in 1961, 1962, etc. I'm not looking for any number in particular, but it would just be neat to know when cars were registered by the (then) current owner.

Obviously they are in sequential order, but when was #200, #1,000, or #2,000 issued?

Thanks. tommmmmmmmmmmmmm

Tom,

Register number 2000 was issued at the end of 1979 - how do I know, it is K3011's number and I registered it when I purchased it.

I've e-mailed Tom saying I made a quite useful list of such info when I was Registrar. Sorry Robin, I obviously forgot to give you a copy. I'll e-mail you and PG one so you can respond to future questions as appropriate.
Cheers.

Well, now, there is a thing!

I cant remember recording the dates of original registration in 1961, although the first twenty cars were definitely registered before the end of that year. The first twelve numbers were drawn from a "hat" at a committee meeting, and it was decreed at that meeting that all following numbers would be issued in order of receipt by the Secretary.

The next hundred came by September 1962, so now we are up to 120. At the time all this was done, I was Secretary as well as Registrar, and it seemed more important to establish an identity for the Register as a whole within the Car Club, which to be honest was a bit of a problem, but we succeeded!

I was then, and always have been one who is keen on running my car, and this was taking quite a bit of time too. I was also trying to hold down a job, so time was somewhat taken up one way and another.

I am sorry that this was the case, and eventually we took steps to separate the Secretary's "job" from that of Registrar. I seem to remember Bob Hudson was the first person who helped in this direction, but the Registrar's post was finally created by Colin Butchers around 1964 or 65. He took over as Secretary in 1971, and I think George Ward became Registrar then. Funny, but I just cannot now remember exactly!

One thing I can say, though, is that it was all fun at the time, and continues to be so. Surely that is what the MG car has always been "for".

Enjoy, but don't worry!

Mike

Thanks for that bit of history, Mike, and also to your part in it.

My thinking was since this register basically registers the cars and not the members, it would be nice to generally know when the cars were registered. Interesting now, and when our generation is gone there will hopefully be continued interest in the history of the cars and the register.

I cannot remember when my PB was registered. Was it before I owned it, or when I bought it in 1974, or when I finished the restoration in 1990? Bad memory, and it's no real issue, but it's almost like tracing a serial number to see when a product was produced.

Kudos to Bob for keeping records and passing them on to current volunteers !

tommm in warm, sunny hi

Tom,

What is the chassis number and/or the Register number of your PB?

Peter.

Tom

Using the logic of Sherlock Holmes (plus the help of 2M3338 and K3-011) I would have thought if the number is lower than 2000 - then you probs registered it in 1974 - if the number is higher than 2000 - then after 1979?

Sorry to be flippant but it just comes so easily to me - tee hee.

Peter, David, Sherlock, etc,

My PB is PB0268 and the register number is 2652. Guess that tells me I did it later in life!!

Also wondering about friend Len's K2, which is K2010 with a reg number of 492. I would guess Peter Gregory registered that in the mid-60's?

Thanks all. tommm

Not too sure about that one. Didn't Mr G come onto the MMM scene much later, late 70s? I recal first seeing his K3 & Q replicas appearing at the 1980 Silverstone Meeting.

I can add a further comment on "significant" numbers. The ex Toulmin and May "Cream Cracker" PB, JB7521 (now owned by Brandon Smith-Hilliard) is number 1000 on the Register. This car came up for sale at Empire Cars in Brighton in about 1962 or 3, I think, and Malcolm Newman had the choice of buying it or the ex Aubrey Ashton-Rigby L2. He chose the 6 rather than the 4. What a choice to make. Knowing that at the time. Steve Dear was interested in expanding his MMM collection, I put him on to the Cracker which he duly bought and whisked it away to the West Country and it was whilst he owned it that the number 1000 was allocated.

As a matter of interest (or not as the case may be !) my first MMM car was an M Type, LJ3782 which I bought in 1957 which was of course before the MMM Register was created. In October 1959 I bought my PA BGH295 (still no MMM Register) and by the summer of 1960 I had the PA on the road, so LJ3782 went up for sale and ownership passed to Ron Ray. In 1961 I became aware of the formation of the Register and eventually, I duly enrolled the car and was allocated number 85. After a few months, the Register sent me a list of Members at the time (I am sure I still have this list somewhere, but I know not where) and to my surprise (and pleasure, I must say), I discovered that Ron had registered LJ3782 and was given register number 24. He must have done that almost immediately he bought the car from me and certainly several months before I stirred into action.

Tom,

Peter Gregory purchased K2010 in 2001/2002 from L. Warrington who had had it for a very long time. I suspect the car was registered (with the Register) in late 1965 or early 1966, I do not know if it was L. Warrington who registered it.

Peter.
