Can any PB owner please clarify what letters and numbers are stamped on the bonnet hinge of a PB. Both PAs (well the first 525 anyway) used the same chassis numbers as the entire PB range. Were PBs stamped with a "PB" prefix, to show that they were from a PB rather than a PA ?

Colin, I don't think so. I received an email about two years ago from someone in Sweeden who had traced PA 519 to me. He advised that he had my bonnet which was stamped 0519 on the hinge. I checked mine and it was correctly stamped with the same number (which matched the chassis) Turns out after some confusion that the Sweedish bonnet was from PB 519.

Many thanks for your reply Mike. It would have been nice to hear from perhaps three or four other PB owners, but as yet this hasn't occurred. If any other PB owners are awake yet this morning, I would appreciate hearing from you,

Many thanks,

Colin B.

Hi Colin,

Rather later in the day I have just been to check PB0682's bonnet, and I can confirm just like Robin that my bonnet only has the number, 0682, and not the type designation stamped along the hinge.

Aren't we all rather sad, and in my case at an age to know better!?

Probably not Andrew. After all, what is the probability that your car has PA0682's bonnet? Pretty small I guess so you do know you have the correct bonnet and it's been trimmed to fit.... even if it was about 75 years ago!

PA1169 had the same arrangement (1169 only). However, the numbers were quite tall and slanted, much like an Italic font. I have never seen another bonnet hinge with quite the same style numbers. I had to replace the hinge, but kept the portion with the original numbers.
Has anyone else seen such a style?

Just out of interest, I've had a look through the photos of bonnet hinge stampings which I collected when Registrar and the following "facts" emerge for what they're worth.

All M, D J1,J2.L1, L2, K1 and K2 stamps in the collection have both the chassis number and the colour code for the paint shop to use when the bonnet arrive before the rest of the car. I assume the F Types were the same though I haven't got shots of any of these.

NAs, NBs, PAs and PBs have just the chassis number but no colour code. One assumes that the production line/body suppliers had been streamlined/changed so that all components arrived at the paint shop together. Of course NB (and NE)chassis numbers followed on the same sequence as NAs so, unlike the P Types, there is no confusion about which model the bonnet came from.

Hope that adds a bit to the story.

Thank you all for your contributions Chaps. A quite remarkable display of consistency. Another small part of MMM history aeems to have been firmly nailed - apart from your slanted numbers Lew. I've never come across that one before.

Many thanks all,

Colin,

To add to the thread I checked NA 0640 today and the bonnet hinge is stamped 0640 but no colour code.

I'd just like to point out that K 0436, a K1 tourer, has only
the 0436 stamped on the hinge. No colour code. The car is the fourth from the end of the run.

Sorry to spoil the fun on your run, Bob.

Brian.

The bonnet hinge on my NB is stamped 0960 whilst the hinge on my L2 is stamped L2023 BK.

The variations on this theme all go to show how bespoke the building of our cars was!

Cathelijne - can you send me a photo of that hinge please? By the look of yours and the other later comments, I reckon that, as with all things Triple-M, the truth (though out there) is not as straightforward as my evidence suggests.

In other words, it looks as if the change over in the production system was not a "big bang" but an evolution with overlaps. The change over from NA to NB specification is similarly opaque for instance.

Good fun eh?
Bob
