Great Ian. I saw Geoffrey Quill roll her straight after take off at Yeovilton in the early '60s. At that time one of the few airworthy Spits.

I have been reading the Spits postings. As I live up the road from Bletchley Park we get many Spits and Lancasters banking right over my back garden as they do two passes of Bletchley Park. No anorak, I'm afraid. They're just Spitfires!

More info here: http://www.scotsman.com/news/the_ultimate_airfix_kit_a_full_scale_spitfire_at_the_bottom_of_my_garden_1_1029821

and here: http://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/2762663. I have no idea of its construction, in case anyone is misled by S&V's quote above.

Many Triple M members were able to see this replica during the Border Reivers' Raid.

This was "The Doctor's" garden when you broke down, was it not? I thought I read somewhere, You could get the Spitfire and other lifesize designs as kit form.
I've seen massive sailing yachts built in tiny backgardens of four storey houses. They need to hire a big old crane to get them out.

As with the Streamlined cars, the Spitfire is not technically the cutting edge of aerodynamics but a beautiful balance of form. Grace+Power...What a name to boot!
When Hitler asked Goering "What do you need to beat the RAF? You will have it." The reply was "squadrons of Spitfires."

The Spitfire.

The Spitfire wing definitely was cutting edge in its day, it wasn't perfect of course, it initially had fabric covered ailerons which resulted in a top speed limit to be imposed until they were replaced with metal ones. The wings were very difficult to manufacture and repair, each rib being a different size and shape and the whole wing being twisted to give a different angle of attack along the span. The result, an aircraft that could out turn anything else in the sky whilst pulling 10g in level flight, a top speed in level flight that rose from 328MPH to 450MPH. The highest speed recorded during a dive was 690MPH - 0.94 Mach at 15,000ft during an emergency descent from 51,550ft in 1951 (the world altitude record for a piston engined aircraft) - the aircraft landed quite undamaged. Not bad for a wing designed in 1936.

My apologies to Ian for hijacking his original thread - this seems to have got a little off subject! Interesting though.

Don't worry Nick - all very interesting!

As for next year, I'll know the date for definite shortly. It should be the third Saturday in July, so the 20th, but we MAY re-set it to the second Saturday to separate it from the Royal International Air Tattoo, so the RAF CT Trustees can join us - we raised GBP 672 for them this year from the lunchtime auction. I'd also like to separate it by one more week from VSCC Prescott. As soon as I confirm the date with the BOC, I'll post it here.

Currently in Appleby-in-Westomorland, heading south tomorrow and back to Seattle Tuesday to start planning for next year!
