Lots of advice re "going", but not much about "stopping".
I guess that says something about MMM owners!

Colin,
I'm sure you saw 6000+ during a mis-spent youth!

Jeremy,

Sure did. Regularly saw 6200 going up Bamford Clough or Blue Hills Mine, or even Wiscombe Park but none of those were in top !

Hope to see it again soon, when Oliver finishes my PA but that will be with Phoenix crank and rods etc. etc. whereas the dear old NA was very standard and will be again, when I finish it.

Hi Phil,
I like your comment about the noise from "passing traffic"....going into 3rd gear and passing at 6000rpm is a great noise!

Back to Neil's original question, yes the J2 is a very usable car !

I drove the car this afternoon between showers to check the work being done in the week... and buy some bread for dinner. We had done 400 km of various roads (including mountain) the previous week-end, together with Bugatti 35's, Rally, Austin-Healey, Jaguar XK, Alfa, Mercedes and the like and never arrived late at any programmed stop (and a few times early). Cruising speed is 50-60 mph on average roads, hills were not a problem in 4th or 3rd, just a couple of hair pins taken in 2nd, and water temperature never raised above 90 ° C even in long climbs despite the ambient 28-30°.

Like you, Neil, my first experience in vintage cars was a post-war (a Triumph TR4 which I still own and love), then an Alfa Giulia. Until I bought a 1924 Amilcar which, after 10 years and 25 000 km I still own and drive too. And you know what ? The J2 has become my favourite, as a wonderful compromise between two eras of automobile design and enjoyment.

Buy a sound and original J2 (with matching numbers to preserve your investment), do whatever has to be done from a mechanical point of view and enjoy !

Hi all, I've decided to defer my purchase until the end of the year so I can get a better handle on what to look for and understand the cars a bit better.

Will definitely take up the offers to have a look at some of your cars of course in the meantime.

There's also a lack of cars on the market at the moment which means it's quite difficult to find the type of car I'm ideally looking for. Learning what that is in the meantime should help too!!!! ;)

Many thanks everyone for the help so far and I'm sure I'll have a few more daft questions to ask in the coming months.

Hello again Neil

Here's a thought for you. On Sunday 29th July we have the annual Triple-M Register Summer Gathering at Peter Green's home at Farnham Royal, Bucks. You'd be very welcome to come along and you can be guaranteed a very comprehensive array of Triple-M cars to look at and even have a go in one or more of them. (Peter has already said to me that you can drive his ex-works PB Cream Cracker if you so wish!)

Details are at http://www.triple-mregister.org/uploads/retro/Entry%20Form%202012.pdf

This is also a reminder to all readers that the closing date for entries for this event is 20th July. We already have a goodly number of entrants, but there is room for more, so don't leave things too late! The Met Office weather forecast for late July shows an improving situation (says he hopefully)!

Regards

Hi Neil,

As a relatively new member who joined around three years ago full of enthusiasm as a J2 owner (having spent many years involved in historic and classic car world), I strongly recommend you contact me off line and I will give you my phone mumber and perhaps we can have a chat. I suspect you may reconsider looking to go down the Triple M route when you hear of my experiences and that of others who have concated me off the forum. It has been an experience I will never forget yet wish so much that I could.

If someone responds on the forum critisising my comments without the facts, then I assume the forum moderator (or should I say one of the co moderators) will allow me to expand.

Regards
Wyn

Wyn

I have read this 'name and shame' posting as well as you earlier one to Neil on the 'intro' thread. I have also just now seen your subsequent comment on the 'Intro' thread - which Forum members may care to note seems to have been provoked by my sending you an e-mail earlier this evening after having seen the first of these postings.

Let's be quite clear - after all this is a well-trodden path, as made fully clear in the Register's policy statemen s on this website: The Register website and this Forum is not the place to air personal or business grievances between Triple-M car owners and suppliers of goods or services.

Nor is it the place for individuals to make statements in pursuit of a grievance - even if (in the mind of the person making the statement) such statements may be justified. And the Register will certainly not condone or be party to the publication of and such statements.

As you know I am highly familiar with your engine rebuild concerns. As you also know, you have received many hours of first hand support and guidance from me and others as we have sought to direct you down an appropriate path in order to resolve your difficulties. It is therefore hurtful to read your posting suggesting that the Club "offers .. no support whatsoever."

I will comment no further on the engine matter.

I hope that you will take the time to reflect on these words.

Regards
Dick Morbey

Dick,

I note your comments. The numerous emails I have received this eveing confirm to me that certain so-called specialists are over protected at the expense of members, some of whom feel that they have had no support whatsoever. I will now fight my own battle but I do feel for others who have been equally badly treated. Don't get me wrong, there are other suppliers within Triple M who I have the utmost respect for, they both know who they are!

I've read both my messages posted this evening and can't see where I have aired personal or business grievences on the forum naming any specialists, or have I missed something? Perhaps we are not now allowed to express dissatistaction even when not naming the so called specialist. If this is the case, then perhaps we should all know for future reference.

Hi Neil.
Backing up Wyn. There are certain dealers and sellers of parts for these cars that will sell you tat. They will gauge your knowledge base and utilise it to line their pockets.
You'll not want for period doorstops!
You are taking the right route by asking around.
The MG Owners Club started off with the ethical base of protecting the Owners interests.
It grew very quickly by giving MG Owners the best deal possible and actively promoting the best that could be found.
I know, I was one of the people there at the very beginning of that club.

Enthusiasm and trust will be your undoing if you're not almighty careful.

I always thought that the MG Owners Club started off (and continued) with the ethical base of building a business for the (Club) owner and protecting his interest. Or have I got that wrong?
Terry.

Hi all, I'm going up to Prescott for the hillclimb but mostly to take a look at the cars of course. If you're going and you don't mind showing me around your car please drop me a line. See you all there!
